Electoral District Of Sherwood
Sherwood was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1950 to 1992. First created for the 1950 state election, the district was based in the south-western suburbs of Brisbane, covering areas that previously belonged to the abolished district of Oxley. At first taking in a wide sweep of then-outer suburban areas such as Sunnybank, Runcorn and Kuraby, it came to be based in the Chelmer peninsula and the Centenary Suburbs from the 1960 election onwards, and was a very safe Liberal seat for its entire existence. Sherwood was abolished by the 1991 redistribution, taking effect at the 1992 state election. Most of its territory was allocated to the new districts of Indooroopilly and Mount Ommaney. Sherwood, Queensland
Sherwood is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Sherwood had a population of 5,313 people. Geography Sherwood is south west of the Brisbane CBD and bounded by the median of the Brisbane River towards the west. Oxley Road is the main thoroughfare through the suburb, entering from the north ( Graceville) and exiting to the south (Corinda). The Ipswich railway line runs parallel to and west of Oxley Avenue, with the suburb served by Sherwood railway station (). The suburb is mostly low and medium-density housing with a retail strip centred along Sherwood Road. History West Oxley State School opened on 25 March 1867. It was renamed Sherwood State School in 1878. The first head teacher was Major William Jenyns Boyd. He was born in Paris in 1842 and migrated to Australia in 1862. Indooroopilly was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1992 to 2017. The district was based in the western suburbs of Brisbane, and straddled both sides of the Brisbane River. It was named for the suburb of Indooroopilly and also included the suburbs of Chelmer, Fig Tree Pocket, Graceville, Sherwood, St Lucia and Taringa. After a redistribution in 2008 it included parts of Tennyson. It was first created for the 1992 election. John Angus Mackenzie Innes (born 22 May 1939) was a Queensland politician and leader of the state Liberal Party. Biography Innes was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 1978 representing the Brisbane-area seat of Sherwood at a by-election to fill a vacancy created by the death of John Herbert. Campaigning heavily on opposition to the controversial street march legislation of then-premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen, Innes easily won the seat, relegating the ruling National Party to a distant fourth place. Thomas Caldwell Kerr (15 August 1887 – 25 June 1956) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Kerr was born at Stanthorpe, Queensland, the son of John Kerr and his wife Mary (née Caldwell). He was educated at Sherwood State School and from 1905 to 1915 was a pearl sheller in the Dutch East Indies and Thursday Island.
