John Hendry (industrialist)
John Hendry, (January 20, 1843 - July 17, 1916), created B. C. Mills, the first major lumber company in western Canada starting with his first mill in 1875. He is a person of National Historic Significance in Canada. Early life Hendry was born in Belledune, New Brunswick to Scottish immigrants James and Margaret Hendry (née Wilson), John Hendry’s father had immigrated to New Brunswick from West Kilbride, Scotland, in 1840, settled in Gloucester County, and was engaged in the sawmill and flour milling businesses. John was educated in New Brunswick, and he received formal and practical training with his father. In the 1860s he and his elder brother started their own sawmill. When their father died John took over the family business temporarily. He then travelled in the “western States,” but in 1870 he returned to New Brunswick to establish a sawmill, which exported to the West Indies. and worked at the family mill before moving west permanently in 1872. John Strathearn Hendrie
Sir John Strathearn Hendrie (August 15, 1857 – July 17, 1923) was the 11th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1914 to 1919. John Hendrie was born in 1857 in Hamilton, Ontario and was educated at Upper Canada College. He became a railway contractor and promoted the Hamilton Bridge Works. In 1885 he married Lena Henderson. He was Mayor of Hamilton, Ontario from 1901 to 1902. He was then Member of Provincial Parliament from 1902 to 1914, where he held the positions of Minister without Portfolio and Hydro-Electric Commissioner. He joined the Hamilton Field Artillery in 1883 and later commanded the 2nd Brigade, Canadian Field Artillery (of the Canadian Militia) until 1909. Hendrie was appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ontario in 1914 and served until 1919. Much of his time in Office was spent helping the War Effort and hosting soldiers, seamen and dignitaries. John Michael Hendry (born 6 January 1970) is a Scottish football forward. Hendry began his career at Dundee before joining English side Tottenham Hotspur in 1990. In April 1991 he scored on his debut in an away defeat at Carrow Road versus Norwich City. A few weeks later he scored a memorable goal, equalising against Manchester United at Old Trafford on the last day of the 1990–91 season, two days after Tottenham had won the 1991 FA Cup Final. John Hendrie (Australian Footballer)
John Hendrie (born 11 June 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the VFL during the 1970s. Hendrie attended Scotch College, Melbourne from 1968 to 1971 and was a member of the first XVIII for three years, being vice-captain of the premiership winning side in his final year of school. A half forward, Hendrie was a good mark and had a sweeping left foot kick. Hendrie kicked 2 goals 8 behinds in the 1976 Grand Final. He finished equal third in the 1975 Brownlow Medal count and his highest scoring season was 52 goals in 1977. A dual premiership player with Hawthorn in 1976 and 1978, Hendrie also represented Victoria in state of origin matches in 1977 and 1978. His struggled to get a senior game with Hawthorn in the last two years of his career, playing 8 games in 1981 and only one in 1982. John Grattan Hendrie (born 24 October 1963) is a Scottish former professional association footballer who played on the right wing or in attack. His career started at Coventry City but he moved to Bradford City, where he played 173 consecutive league games, winning one promotion and narrowly missing out on another. Following spells with Newcastle United and Leeds United, he moved to Middlesbrough and scored the final goal at Ayresome Park among his 44 goals for Boro. When he was replaced by Brazilian Juninho he moved to Barnsley where he finished his career and also served as manager. His uncle is another Scottish former pro footballer, Paul Hendrie.
