John Hawryluk
John Martin Hawryluk (December 8, 1910 in Winnipeg, Manitoba – December 5, 1975) was a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1949 to 1962, initially for the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation and later for its successor party, the NDP. The son of Michael Hawryluk and Maria Marcinow, Hawryluk was educated at the University of Manitoba, from which he received Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Education and Master of Education degrees. He served as a teacher and vice principal at Prince Edward School and later as the school principal of Polson School, Melrose Junior High and Munroe Junior High in East Kildonan, retiring from Munroe Junior High in 1974. He was also president of the Winnipeg Ukrainian and Professional Business Men's Club, and the Manitoba Teachers' Society. Winnipeg () is the capital and largest city of the province of Manitoba in Canada. Bill Kardash
William Arthur Kardash (June 10, 1912 – January 17, 1997) was a politician and member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1941 until 1958. He served as Winnipeg MLA from 1941 to 1958, as Worker's Candidate at first, then as a representative of the Labor-Progressive Party. He was among the handful of Communists elected in Winnipeg between 1927 and 1983. The youngest child of Ukrainian Canadian parents Danylo Kardash and Ulyta Byck, he was born in Hafford, Saskatchewan and educated at Hafford High School. Kardash was a veteran of the Spanish Civil War, having fought with the Mackenzie–Papineau Battalion. He was a member of the Communist Party of Canada and, after 1943, the Labor-Progressive Party, which was the legal front of the Communist Party after it was banned. The Manitoba Historical Society is a historical society in the province of Manitoba, Canada. It was created in 1879 by an act of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, and describes itself as "the oldest organization in western Canada devoted to the promotion of public interest in, and preservation of, the region’s historical resources". The society publishes a journal called ''Manitoba History'' and presents an annual literary award called the Margaret McWilliams Award. The current president of the society is Gordon Goldsborough. Mark G. Smerchanski (November 1, 1914 – September 21, 1989) was a Canadian politician. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1962 to 1966, and a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1968 to 1972. Smerchanski was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada and the Manitoba Liberal Party. Born in Malonton, Manitoba, the son of Anton Smerchanski and Dora Huley, both of Ukrainian descent, Smerchanski was educated at the University of Manitoba and the Virginia Polytechnical Institute, graduating in 1938. In 1940, Smerchanski married Patricia N. Paget. He worked as a professor of Engineering before entering politics, and was a member of the Canadian Institute for Mining and Metallurgy, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the Pan-American Institute of Mining Engineers and the Society of Economic Geologists.
