John Haile
John Haile was an elderly secular priest who was vicar of Isleworth Middlesex in the early 16th century; his significance in history, like that of many of the English martyrs, begins only with the events which led to his death. Life He was a fellow of King's Hall, Cambridge, Kings Hall, Cambridge, and is said to have lived an edifying life. He held the benefice of Chelmsford in Essex before his promotion to Isleworth on 13 August 1521. He was arrested in March 1535 by King Henry VIII's men and accused of the crime of treason for speaking against the King's divorce and remarriage. The information was laid by another priest, Fern of Teddington who was also convicted of treason, but received a pardon. John Haile was executed at Tyburn on 4 May 1535, together with the first Carthusian Martyrs of London and the Bridgettines, Bridgettine priest Richard Reynolds (martyr), Richard Reynolds, the confessor of nearby Syon Abbey. John Hale (Roundhead)
John Hale (1614–1691) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1654 and 1660. He fought in the Parliamentary army in the English Civil War. Hale was the eldest son of John Hale, grocer of Soper Lane, London and Harmer Green, Welwyn, Hertfordshire and his wife Elizabeth Browne, daughter of Humphrey Browne of Essex. He was baptised on 19 March 1614 and was six when he succeeded to the family estates on the death of his father in 1620. In 1643 and 1643 he was colonel of foot in the Parliamentary army. John Hale (minister)
John Hale (June 3, 1636 – May 15, 1700) was the Puritan pastor of Beverly, Massachusetts, and took part in the Salem witch trials in 1692. He was one of the most prominent and influential ministers associated with the witch trials, being noted as having initially supported the trials and then changing his mind and publishing a critique of them. His book, ''A Modest Enquiry Into the Nature of Witchcraft'' was published posthumously, two years after his death. The book provides an alternative Christian theory for what actually happened in Salem in 1692, with Hale theorizing that demons impersonated the accused and appeared in their forms to the afflicted. He most likely changed his views about those executed for "being witches" due to the fact that his own wife was accused as being a witch, though never prosecuted. General John Hale (1728–1806) was a British army officer, who is remembered chiefly for his close friendship with General James Wolfe, and for his exceptionally large number of children by his wife Mary Chaloner, a noted beauty who was painted by Joshua Reynolds. John Hale (Canadian Politician)
The Honourable John Hale (1765 – 24 December 1838) was a member of the Legislative Council of Lower Canada. He was born in England. He entered into the Royal Marines in 1776 and became a lieutenant in the 2nd Foot Regiment in 1779, and then captain. He was the military secretary of Prince Edward Augustus and accompanied him to Halifax, Nova Scotia. After a brief return to England, he went to Quebec City in 1799 and eventually became inspector-general of public accounts in 1807. In 1819 he acquired the seigneurie of Sainte-Anne-de-La-Pérade. He was president of a bank from 1821 to 1823. In 1799, he married Elizabeth Frances Amherst. He was a member of the Legislative Council of Lower Canada from 1808 until its dissolution in 1838 in the wake of the Lower Canada Rebellion, and was its deputy speaker on several occasions. John Blackwell Hale (February 27, 1831 – February 1, 1905) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. Born in Brooks (now Hancock) County, Virginia (now West Virginia), Hale attended the common schools. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in Brunswick, Missouri. He served as member of the State house of representatives in 1856–1858. He served as presidential elector on the Democratic ticket of Douglas and Johnson in 1860. He served as colonel of the Sixty-fifth Regiment, Missouri Militia, and of the Fourth Provisional Regiment, Missouri Militia, in the United States service during the Civil War. John Henry Hale
John Henry Hale (June 5, 1878 – March 27, 1944) was a prominent surgeon, professor, and philanthropist who played a prominent role in establishing the black medical community. Hailed as the "dean of American Negro surgeons," Hale conducted over 30,000 surgeries, mainly at Meharry Medical College and Millie E. Hale Hospital. He practiced medicine and taught at Meharry for 29 years, mentoring a plethora of black surgeons. Together with his wife, Millie, Hale did much philanthropic work in his local black community in Nashville, Tennessee. Together, they distributed food to the poor, offered much of their medical care for free, ran free medical classes and lectures, and converted their home into a local community center — a hosting place for many local community organizations. Sir John Rigby Hale (17 September 1923 – 12 August 1999) was a British historian and translator, best known for his Renaissance studies. Biography Hale was born in Ashford, Kent. He was educated at Jesus College, Oxford (B.A., 1948, M.A., 1953). He also attended Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University (1948–49).
