John H. Maloney
John H. Maloney, OPEI (February 6, 1918 – May 10, 2001) was a Canadian politician and physician. He represented 6th Queens in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1970 to 1979 as a Liberal. Maloney was born in 1918 in Barachois, Quebec. He married Marguerite Jobe in 1945. Maloney was educated at St. Francis Xavier University, and received a medical degree from McGill University in 1942. From 1943 to 1946, he served overseas in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Maloney entered provincial politics in the 1970 election, when he was elected councillor for the electoral district of 6th Queens. On June 25, 1970, Maloney was appointed to the Executive Council of Prince Edward Island as Minister of Health and Welfare. In November 1971, he was given an additional role in cabinet as Minister of Industry and Commerce. In October 1972, he was shuffled from the health portfolio to Minister of Development. Order Of Prince Edward Island
The Order of Prince Edward Island (french: Ordre de Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is a civilian honour for merit in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Instituted in 1996 by Lieutenant Governor Gilbert Clements, on the advice of the Cabinet under Premier Catherine Callbeck, the order is administered by the Governor-in-Council and is intended to honour current or former Prince Edward Island residents for conspicuous achievements in any field, being thus described as the highest honour amongst all others conferred by the Prince Edward Island Crown. The 1979 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 23, 1979. The election was held just one year after the 1978 election, which featured a 17–15 split in MLAs in the legislature. Following the resignation of former premier Alex Campbell from his seat, the Legislature was in a 15–15 tie in voting members (the Liberal Speaker, Russell Perry, could not cast active votes in his role), the new Premier Bennett Campbell decided to call an election in an effort to regain his lost majority. The gambit failed, and instead the Progressive Conservatives led by Angus MacLean formed a strong majority government. The campaign was the first to feature a female party leader running in PEI, with Doreen Sark serving as interim leader of the NDP. Executive Council Of Prince Edward Island
The Executive Council of Prince Edward Island (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Prince Edward Island) is the cabinet of that Canadian province. Almost always made up of members of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Cabinet of Canada while being smaller in size. As federal and provincial responsibilities differ there are a number of different portfolios between the federal and provincial governments.
