John Guy (New Zealand Cricketer)
John William Guy (born 29 August 1934) is a former New Zealand cricketer who played 12 Tests for the national team between 1955 and 1961. He currently resides in Melbourne, Australia. Life and career Guy was born in Nelson on 29 August 1934, and was educated at Nelson College between 1950 and 1953. Guy made his first-class cricket debut in 1953–54 for Central Districts. Moving around New Zealand in the course of his working career, he later represented Canterbury, Otago and Wellington, and finished his first-class career with Northern Districts in 1972–73. He is the only player to represent five New Zealand provincial teams in first-class cricket. He also played twice for Northamptonshire in the 1958 English cricket season. Guy played his first Tests on the tour of Pakistan in 1955–56. John Guy (colonial Administrator)
John Guy (25 December 1568 – February 1629) was an English merchant adventurer, colonist and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1621 to 1624. He was the first proprietary governor of Newfoundland Colony, the first attempt to establish a colony on Newfoundland. Early life Guy was the eldest son and second child of Thomas Guy, a cordwainer (shoemaker) of Bristol. He was born on 25 December 1568, and baptized a week later on 1 January 1569 at St Mary le Port Church, Bristol. He spent his youth growing up amongst his siblings, and was well educated for his times, he managed in later life to write poetry in Latin. He was apprenticed to a yeoman farmer, and on his parents' deaths, he inherited the family shoemaking business, he had various farming interests, and served as a factor representing the interests of the Bristol merchant community overseas for a period in Spain, where he mastered the art of navigation. John Guy (historian)
John Alexander Guy (born 16 January 1949) is a British historian and biographer. Biography Born in Warragul, Victoria, Australia, Guy moved to Britain with his parents in 1952. He was educated at King Edward VII School in Lytham St Annes in Lancashire, and Clare College, Cambridge, where he read history, achieving a First. At Cambridge, Guy studied under the Tudor specialist Geoffrey Rudolph Elton. He was awarded a Greene Cup by Clare College and the Yorke Prize by the University of Cambridge. During his academic career, Guy has held posts at St Andrews University (where he is Honorary Professor and was sometime Vice-Principal for Research), Bristol University, UC Berkeley, Rochester and Johns Hopkins. Guy currently teaches at Cambridge University, as a fellow of Clare College, where he teaches part-time so he can devote more time to his writing and broadcasting career.
