John Gutch (colonial Administrator)
Sir John Gutch, KCMG, OBE (12 July 1905 – 11 February 1988) was a British colonial administrator. His career in the Colonial Service began in 1928, with his appointment as an Assistant District Commissioner in the Gold Coast (now Ghana). In 1934, he was promoted to Assistant Colonial Secretary. He was posted to the Mandate of Palestine in 1936, eventually becoming Principal Commissioner. He was one of the survivors of the King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem on 22 July 1946. He was posted by the Foreign Office to Cyrenaica in 1948. He became Chief Secretary of British Guiana in 1950. From September 1955 to January 1961, he was Governor of the Solomon Islands and High Commissioner for the Western Pacific. In this role he oversaw not only the Solomon Islands but also the New Hebrides and the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. The Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George is a British order of chivalry founded on 28 April 1818 by George IV, Prince of Wales, while he was acting as prince regent for his father, King George III. It is named in honour of two military saints, Michael and George. The Order of St Michael and St George was originally awarded to those holding commands or high position in the Mediterranean territories acquired in the Napoleonic Wars, and was subsequently extended to holders of similar office or position in other territories of the British Empire. New Hebrides
New Hebrides, officially the New Hebrides Condominium (french: link=no, Condominium des Nouvelles-Hébrides, "Condominium of the New Hebrides") and named after the Hebrides Scottish archipelago, was the colonial name for the island group in the South Pacific Ocean that is now Vanuatu. Native people had inhabited the islands for three thousand years before the first Europeans arrived in 1606 from a Spanish expedition led by Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandes de Queirós. The islands were colonised by both the British and French in the 18th century, shortly after Captain James Cook visited. The two countries eventually signed an agreement making the islands an Anglo-French condominium that divided New Hebrides into two separate communities: one Anglophone and one Francophone. The Legislative Council (LegCo) was the legislature of the Solomon Islands between 1960 and 1970. History The Legislative Council was created following the proclamation of the British Solomon Islands (Constitution) Order-in-Council, 1960 on 18 October 1960. It created a Council with 21 members, eleven of which were government officials and ten were nominees, of which six had to be Solomon Islanders. Its first meeting was held in 1961 in Honiara Teachers' College Assembly Hall. In 1964 a new constitution was produced, introducing eight elected members to an enlarged 25-member Council alongside two nominees. However, only one of the eight members were directly-elected, with elections taking place in the Honiara constituency resulting in Eric Lawson becoming the first elected member.
