John Grieve Woods
John Grieve Woods (17 January 1900 – 27 April 1980) was an Australian general practitioner and soldier. Woods was born in Albury, New South Wales and died in Newcastle, New South Wales. He was the son of Dr. William Cleaver Woods, the noted pioneer in Australian radiology and x-rays. Woods was known by many as ''the Flying Doctor'' for his years of service in the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Albury () is a major regional city in New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the Hume Highway and the northern side of the Murray River. William Cleaver Woods
William Cleaver Woods, M.B., Ch.M. Edinburgh, M.D. (25 April 1852 – 9 April 1943) was a physician, politician and pioneer in Australian medical science specialising in X-rays for diagnostic applications and perhaps the first in the world to utilize X-rays for the treatment of cancer. Life and times In 1852, Woods was born in West Derby, Lancashire in England, the son of Richard Woods and Catherine née Cromwell. He was christened on 7 June 1852 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. At the age of 10, the family moved to Melbourne in Australia and Woods grew up in Ballarat. Woods, a physician from Liverpool, England, married Margaret, née Grieve from New South Wales. The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), commonly known as the Flying Doctor, is an air medical service in Australia. It is a non-profit organisation that provides emergency and primary health care services for those living in rural, remote and regional areas of Australia who cannot access a hospital or general practice due to the vast distances of the Outback. John Flynn (25 November 18805 May 1951) was an Australian Presbyterian minister who founded the Australian Inland Mission (AIM) which later separated into Frontier Services and the Presbyterian Inland Mission, as well as founding what became the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the world's first air ambulance. Early life Educated at Snake Valley, Sunshine and Braybrook primary schools, he matriculated from University High School in Parkville in Melbourne, aged 18. Unable to finance a university course, he became a pupil-teacher with the Victorian Education Department and developed interests in photography and first aid. In 1903 he began training for the ministry through an extra-mural course for 'student lay pastors', serving meanwhile in pioneering districts of Beech Forest and Buchan.
