John Grant (Scottish Footballer)
John Grant (16 June 1931 – 28 January 2021) was a Scottish professional footballer, who played for Hibernian, Raith Rovers and the Scotland national team. Grant signed for Hibs in 1949, but had to wait until 1954 to make his league debut due to the strength of the Hibs side in the early 1950s. Hibs won the league championship in 1951 and 1952, and were denied a third successive championship in 1953 on goal average. Grant was a stalwart of the Hibs side for the following decade, but he was released by Jock Stein in 1964. Grant played for Raith Rovers for a further season before retiring from the game. Grant played for Scotland twice, against Northern Ireland and Wales during the 1959 British Home Championship. Jock Stein
John "Jock" Stein (5 October 1922 – 10 September 1985) was a Scottish football player and manager. He was the first manager of a British side to win the European Cup, with Celtic in 1967. Stein also guided Celtic to nine successive Scottish League championships between 1966 and 1974. Stein worked as a coalminer while playing football part-time for Blantyre Victoria and then Albion Rovers. He became a full-time professional football player with Welsh club Llanelli Town, but returned to Scotland with Celtic in 1951. He enjoyed some success with Celtic, winning the Coronation Cup in 1953 and a Scottish league and Scottish Cup double in 1954. Ankle injuries forced Stein to retire from playing football in 1957. The Northern Ireland national football team represents Northern Ireland in international association football. From 1882 to 1920, all of Ireland was represented by a single side, the Ireland national football team (1882–1950), Ireland national football team, organised by the Irish Football Association (IFA). In professional association football, a free transfer, also known as a Bosman transfer, involves a professional association football club releasing a player when the player's contract has expired or made available just before the end of the contract. The player can then go on to sign for any club offering a contract to them. How it works The club acquiring the player does not have to pay any compensation for their release due to having nothing left to pay on their contract, hence, the term free transfer. Some individual leagues have restrictions to protect academies. For example, in the UK, players under 24 who are out of contract are only available on a free transfer if released by the club holding the players' licence.
