John Goldie (philosopher)
John Goldie, Goudie or Gowdie (1717–1811) the 'Philosopher' was a friend of the poet Robert Burns who was born the son of a miller at Craigmill on the Cessnock Water in East Ayrshire, Scotland. He was a miller, mechanic, cabinet maker, later a wine merchant and had interests ranging from the study of mathematics and astronomy to that of theology, publishing several books, in particular in 1780 the popular three volume ''Essays on various Important Subjects Moral and Divine, being an attempt to distinguish True from False Religion'', a publication that became generally known as 'Goudie's Bible' and raised him to national prominence. The name John Goldie will be used throughout for consistency. John Goldie (21 March 1793 – 23 July 1886) was a Scottish-born botanist and author. He is credited with recording the existence of fourteen plant species previously unknown to science including ''Dryopteris goldieana'', ''Stellaria longipes'' and ''Drosera linearis''. Early life and education Goldie was born in Kirkoswald in 1793, the son of William Goudie and Janet McClure. As a teenager, Goldie had apprenticed as a gardener and was later employed at the Glasgow Botanic Garden where he accumulated most of his knowledge of botany. Having studied language at the University of Glasgow, Goldie was fluent in Greek, French, and Hebrew, although he never registered for a degree due to financial problems.P. M. Eckel. John Goldie (barrister)
John Haviland Dashwood Goldie (March 1849 – April 1896) was an English rower, and barrister. He was the Cambridge University Boat Club President between 1870 and 1872, won the Colquhoun Sculls in 1870 and captained Leander Club between 1873 and 1876. He was known by his middle name of "Dashwood" by his family and close friends. Goldie was the son of Rev. Charles Dashwood Goldie, vicar of St Ives, Cambridgeshire for twenty years. He was educated at Eton and St John's College, Cambridge. Goldie was treasurer of the Pitt Club at Cambridge. He became a barrister. Goldie captained St Ives Rowing Club in 1869 and won the Colquhoun Sculls in 1870. He stroked the Cambridge crew in the Boat Race in the 1869, 1870, 1871 and 1872 races. Cambridge's victory in 1870 ended Oxford's nine consecutive years of victories and Cambridge won again in 1871 and 1872. Jack Goldie
John Wyllie Goldie (10 October 1889 – 26 February 1958) was a Scottish footballer who played as a centre half or right half. He began his career with junior club Hurlford Thistle before moving to England with Fulham of the Football League Second Division, where he briefly played alongside older brother Bill (another brother, Archie, was also a professional). A move to Glossop in 1911 led to move playing time, and he soon moved on to Bury.
