John Gilmore (writer)
John "Jonathan" Gilmore (July 5, 1935 - October 13, 2016) was an American author and gonzo journalist known for iconoclastic Hollywood memoirs, true crime literature and hard-boiled fiction. A motion picture, television and stage actor in Los Angeles and New York in the 1950s, his friends including James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, Gilmore has also written about his encounter with Elizabeth Short a.k.a. "The Black Dahlia" during his youth. Gilmore emerged as a writer from the Beat Generation in the '60s, influenced by Jack Kerouac and befriended by author William S. Burroughs. The publication of his true crime book "Severed: The True Story of the Black Dahlia," ushered in a cult following for the author. He created the ''alt.*'' hierarchy in Usenet and is a major contributor to the GNU Project. An outspoken civil libertarian, Gilmore has sued the Federal Aviation Administration, the United States Department of Justice, and others. He was the plaintiff in the prominent case '' Gilmore v. John Gilmore (September 28, 1931 – August 20, 1995) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and percussionist. He was known for his tenure with the avant-garde keyboardist/bandleader Sun Ra from the 1950s to the 1990s. Biography Gilmore was raised in Chicago and played clarinet from the age of 14. He took up the tenor saxophone while serving in the United States Air Force from 1948 through 1951. He then pursued a musical career, beginning as a tenor saxophonist on a national tour with the Harlem Globetrotters in an ensemble that included pianist Earl Hines in 1952. In 1953 Gilmore met pianist and bandleader Sun Ra who had a profound impact on him as a musician. John Gilmore (1950 – December 7, 1994) was an American operatic tenor. His voice is preserved on several recordings made for the Metropolitan Opera radio broadcasts and on the television program ''Live from the Metropolitan Opera''. Life and career Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Gilmore studied opera at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University where he earned both a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music degrees. John Henry Gilmore, Jr. (born September 21, 1979) is a former American football tight end in the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the sixth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Penn State.
