John Gayer or Gayre (baptised 1584 - died 20 July 1649) was an English merchant who was Lord Mayor of London in 1646. Life He was born in Plymouth and baptised in 1584. He was the eldest son of John Gayer senior, a merchant, and Margaret Trelawney. Both his parents were Cornish by birth: the Gayer family came originally from Liskeard. Gayer moved to London, and at one stage of his career spent some years in Syria, where a strange event later led him to institute the Lion sermon. He became a city of London merchant and a member of the Worshipful Company of Fishmongers. He was one of the Court Assistants from 1617 to 1618, from 1622 to 1623, and from 1624 to 1626. John Gayer (died 1711)
Sir John Gayer (died 1711) was the East India Company's General from May 1694 to November 1704. The General was in charge of all the Company's affairs in India. He was also the governor of Bombay for the same period. Gayer's tenure was dominated by conflict with the English Company Trading to the East Indies (New Company), set up in 1698. This led to his imprisonment in Surat for many years. Life He was the son of Humfrey Gayer, merchant, of Plymouth, Devon, and nephew of John Gayer (Lord Mayor of London), Sir John Gayer, Lord Mayor of London. The Gayer family originally came from Liskeard. At an early age, he entered the service of the East India Company, and rose to be a sea captain. On being appointed by the owners commander of the ship Society, he was admitted into the freedom of the company on 7 April 1682.
