John Frazer (cricketer)
John Ewan Frazer (2 April 1901 – 2 January 1927) played first-class cricket for Somerset, Sussex and Oxford University between 1921 and 1924. He was born at Sydney, Australia and died following a ski-ing accident at Davos, Switzerland. Background and education The son of an Australian doctor who took his medical degree at Oxford University and then settled at East Grinstead, Sussex, Frazer was educated at Winchester College where he was an all-round sportsman. As a cricketer he was a left-handed middle-order or opening batsman and a left-arm fast-medium bowler; however, his bowling "mysteriously deserted him – possibly a result of gymnastics", according to his obituary, written by his Winchester contemporary Douglas Jardine in the 1928 edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, and he did not bowl in first-class cricket. Ernest Smith (cricketer, Born 1869)
Ernest Smith (19 October 1869 – 9 April 1945) was an English amateur first-class cricketer, who played twenty one games for Oxford University from 1888 to 1891, 154 matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club from 1888 to 1907, and four for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from 1892 to 1902. Smith was born in Morley, West Riding of Yorkshire, and educated at Clifton College and University College, Oxford. In a first-class career that lasted from 1888, when he was 18, till 1928, when he was 58, he also played cricket for Oxford and Cambridge Universities Past and Present (1890), fifteen matches for The Gentlemen (1891–1906), North of England (1891–1908), Gentlemen of England (1891–1910) and C. The Saffrons
The Saffrons is a multi-purpose sports ground in Eastbourne, East Sussex. The ground is home to Eastbourne Cricket Club, Eastbourne Town Football Club, Eastbourne Hockey Club and Compton Croquet Club. There is also a sand dressed astroturf pitch. The sports ground is located on the edge of Eastbourne town centre, next to the town hall and is in easy reach of local transport links. The ground was first used in 1884. Sussex County Cricket Club played some of their matches there between 1896 and 2000, and recently from 2017. A blue is an award of sporting colours earned by athletes at some universities and schools for competition at the highest level. Greenbank Cricket Ground
Greenbank (also known as Packer's Ground) is a cricket ground in Bristol. The ground was initially owned by H.J. Packer and Co Ltd. The first first-class match on the ground was in 1922, when Gloucestershire played Sussex. Gloucestershire played first-class matches at the ground from 1922 to 1928, playing a total of 20 first-class matches there, the last of which saw them play Derbyshire in the 1928 County Championship. Gloucestershire also played a non first-class at the ground in 1924 against a Scotland XI. The ground still exists today, after being sold by H.J. Packer and Co Ltd in 1935, it came under the ownership of the local council and is today used by the Old Georgian Eastville Club. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Gloucestershire. Founded in 1870, Gloucestershire have always been first-class and have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The club played its first senior match in 1870 and W. G. The County Cricket Ground, known for sponsorship reasons as The 1st Central County Ground, is a cricket venue in Hove, East Sussex, England. The County Ground is the home of Sussex County Cricket Club, where most Sussex home matches since 1872 have been played, although many other grounds in Sussex have been used. Sussex CCC continue to play some of their games away from The County Ground, at either Arundel Castle and Horsham. County Championship
The County Championship (referred to as the LV= Insurance County Championship for sponsorship reasons) is the domestic first-class cricket competition in England and Wales and is organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). It became an official title in 1890. The competition consists of eighteen clubs named after, and representing historic counties, seventeen from England and one from Wales. The earliest known inter-county match was played in 1709. Until 1889, the concept of an unofficial county championship existed whereby various claims would be made by or on behalf of a particular club as the "Champion County", an archaic term which now has the specific meaning of a claimant for the unofficial title prior to 1890. Guy Blaikie
Kenneth Guy Blaikie (8 May 1897 – 8 June 1968), generally known as "Bill Blaikie", played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Somerset in the early 1920s. He was born at Johannesburg in South Africa and died at Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada. He was the father of the prominent Canadian lawyer and politician Peter Blaikie. Family and career Blaikie's grandfather moved to South Africa from Scotland in 1861. His father served in active duty during the Second Boer War and died during the Siege of Ladysmith in 1900. Blaikie himself was in 1918 awarded a Rhodes Scholar to study at the University of Oxford, though he was allowed to defer his Oxford entry because at this stage he was still serving in the army.
