John Francis Small
John Francis Small (1853 – 5 July 1923) was an Irish nationalist politician of the Irish Parliamentary Party. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland as a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Wexford from 1883 to 1885, and for South Down from 1885 to 1886. John Francis Small was admitted as a solicitor in 1875 and later became coroner for South Armagh, and a Poor Law Guardian Boards of guardians were ''ad hoc'' authorities that administered Poor Law in the United Kingdom from 1835 to 1930. 1880 United Kingdom General Election
The 1880 United Kingdom general election was a general election in the United Kingdom held from 31 March to 27 April 1880. Its intense rhetoric was led by the Midlothian campaign of the Liberals, particularly the fierce oratory of Liberal leader William Gladstone. He vehemently attacked the foreign policy of the government of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, as utterly immoral. Liberals secured one of their largest-ever majorities, leaving the Conservatives a distant second. As a result of the campaign, the Liberal Commons leader, Lord Hartington (heir apparent to the Duke of Devonshire) and that in the Lords, Lord Granville, stood back in favour of Gladstone, who thus became Prime Minister a second time. Michael McCartan
Michael McCartan (1 January 1851 – 30 September 1902) was an Irish nationalist politician. He sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1886 to 1902. McCartan was born in Castlewellan, County Down, and educated at St. Malachy's College in Belfast and then Blackrock College. He became a solicitor in 1882. At the 1886 general election he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Down. He sat for the Irish Parliamentary Party until the split in 1890, when he joined the anti-Parnellite Irish National Federation The Irish National Federation (INF) was a nationalist political party in Ireland. 1886 United Kingdom General Election
The 1886 United Kingdom general election took place from 1 to 27 July 1886, following the defeat of the Government of Ireland Bill 1886. It resulted in a major reversal of the results of the 1885 election as the Conservatives, led by Lord Salisbury, were joined in an electoral pact with the breakaway Unionist wing of the Liberals led by Lord Hartington (later the Duke of Devonshire) and Joseph Chamberlain. The new Liberal Unionist party gave the Conservatives their parliamentary majority but did not join them in a formal coalition. William Ewart Gladstone's Liberals, who supported the Irish Home Rule movement, and their sometimes allies the Irish Parliamentary Party, led by Charles Stewart Parnell, were placed a distant second. The 1885 United Kingdom general election was held from 24 November to 18 December 1885. This was the first general election after an Representation of the People Act 1884, extension of the franchise and Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, redistribution of seats.
