John Forbes (botanist)
John Forbes, M.D. (1798–1823) was an English botanist. Forbes was born in 1798, and became a pupil of John Shepherd of the Liverpool botanic garden. The Horticultural Society despatched him to the east coast of Africa, and he left London in February 1822, in the expedition commanded by Captain William Fitzwilliam Owen. He sent home substantial collections from Madeira, Rio de Janeiro, the Cape of Good Hope, and Madagascar, after which he decided to march up the Zambesi River to the Portuguese station at Zumbo, three hundred leagues from the mouth of the river, and thence southwards to the Cape. He succumbed to fatigue and privation at Vila de Sena, Sena, in August 1823, before travelling half the distance. The genus Forbesia, Eckl., commemorates him as collector. John Murray Forbes (diplomat)
John Murray Forbes (1771 – June 14, 1831) was an American diplomat. He served as the Chargé d'Affaires to the Republic of Buenos Aires from 1825 to 1831. Early life John Murray Forbes was born in 1771. Career Forbes served as American consul in Copenhagen, Hamburg and Statin from 1801 to 1819. He owned the country house America outside Copenhagen and constructed an American-style windmill known as America Mill at the site in 1814. He served as the Chargé d'Affaires to the Republic of Buenos Aires (later United States Ambassador to Argentina) from 1825 to 1831. Later career In 1825 he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the American Antiquarian Society. John Forbes, 8th Lord Forbes (1542–1606) was a Scottish aristocrat. He was a son of William Forbes, 7th Lord Forbes (1513-1593) and Elizabeth Keith, the heiress of Inverugie. He was first Master of Forbes, and became Lord Forbes on the death of his father. In 1590 John Forbes, known as the Master of Forbes, was accused of imprisoning his father in a chamber at Druminnor Castle and hitting him on the head with the pommel of his sword. Two younger brothers, Robert Forbes, Commendator of Monymusk, and James Forbes of Fechell brought their father's complaint to the Privy Council, but the Master of Forbes denied it. The Council declared that Drumminor should be kept by William Forbes of Tolquhoun and others till Lord Forbes came to Edinburgh or sent further testimony. In May 1591 the Master of Forbes claimed his brothers had turned his father against him, and while Lord Forbes was lying sick at Dundee they had entered and robbed the House of Druminnor. John Forbes, 6th Lord Forbes
John Forbes, 6th Lord Forbes (died 1547) was a Scottish landowner. He was the son of William Forbes, 3rd Lord Forbes and Christian Gordon, daughter of Alexander Gordon, 1st Earl of Huntly. He became Lord Forbes after the death of his brother Arthur in 1493. In 1528 he accompanied James V to Edinburgh from Stirling Castle and swore the "great oath" against the Douglas family. He was involved in a feud in Aberdeen and the killing of Alexander Seton of Meldrum. In 1530 he was ordered to compensate Lord Elphinstone for an attack on Kildrummy Castle in 1525. In 1536 he was charged with treason and was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle and was released in 1538. In 1542 Forbes and the Earl of Huntly fought in the north of Scotland. He died in 1547. John Forbes (1 September 1950 – 23 January 1998) was an Australian poet. Forbes was born in Melbourne, but during his childhood his family lived in northern Queensland, Malaya and New Guinea. He went to Sydney University, and his circle of friends included the poets Robert Adamson, Martin Johnston, and John Tranter. It was at this time that the work of the American poets Ted Berrigan, John Ashbery and Frank O'Hara made a strong and lasting impression on him. He returned to live in Melbourne in the late 1980s, where he became the poetry editor of '' Scripsi''. His friends around this time included the poets Gig Ryan, Laurie Duggan and Alan Wearne. John B. Forbes (born 1795?) was an architect in Cheltenham. He designed the Pittville Pump Room for Joseph Pitt (1825-1830) and St Paul's Church (1829-1831). Besides the Pump Room, on which he personally worked 1825–28, and St Paul's Church, he is credited with several other buildings in Cheltenham, including 129-131 Promenade, 1-13 Imperial Square, 3 houses in St James Square, Montpellier Villas, 29-37 Pittville Lawn, and Brandon House, Grafton Road. He had difficulty managing the finances of several concurrent speculative developments. John Malcolm Forbes (1847 – February 19, 1904) was an American businessman and sportsman. He was born in Milton, Massachusetts in 1847 into the wealthy Forbes family of Boston, with his father being John Murray Forbes. He was a prominent yachtsman and breeder of Standardbred horses. Horses Forbes has been described as one of the most important harness racing breeders of all time. In 1890 he purchased Jack, 2:12, for a speedway horse. As his interest grew he established Forbes Farm by buying and consolidating the Hunt, Davenport and Farrington farms. The Farrington farmhouse once stood on the site of the current Prowse residence. John Forbes (1767–1823) and his elder brother Thomas Forbes (d.1808) were Scottish traders who operated in East Florida, West Florida, Spanish Florida and the southeastern borderlands during the tail end of the eighteenth century. John Forbes (born 29 January 1970) is an Australian sailor and has competed at three Olympic Games, winning a bronze at Barcelona 1992 and silver in 2000 at the Sydney Games. Forbes has won seven World Championships, four European Championships, and ten Australian Championships. He was voted Australian Sailor of the Year four times (91/92, 01/02, 02/03 & 03/04) and is also an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. John Forbes (13 January 1862 – 31 January 1928) was a Scottish footballer who played in the English Football League for Blackburn Rovers. Club career Vale of Leven Forbes began his career as a forward with Star of Leven. In 1879 he joined Vale of Leven, again as a forward, but was quickly converted into a half-back and then full-back due to his pace. While playing for the ''Vale'' he appeared in two Scottish Cup Finals, in 1883 and 1885, but had the misfortune to be on the losing side to local rivals on both occasions. The 1883 final was played at the first Hampden Park on 31 March 1883 and the opposition was Dumbarton; it ended 2–2. In the replay, also at Hampden on 7 April, Dumbarton won 2–1.
