John Fitzgerald (Australian Footballer, Born 1961)
John Fitzgerald (born 21 November 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Fitzgerald played under 19s football at Geelong, then instead of pursuing a VFL career played with St Joseph's in the Geelong Football League. A rover, Fitzgerald was lured back to the club in 1986 and appeared in the final five rounds of the season. He played a further three games early in the 1987 VFL season. In 1989, Fitzgerald captained St Joseph's to a premiership and was named "best and ground" in the grand final. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. The Geelong Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league in Victoria, Australia. It is widely regarded as the highest standard Australian rules football league in regional Victoria, with several former AFL players now playing for a variety of clubs. History The league was formed in 1979 when twelve clubs broke away from the Geelong & District Football League. The city and country clubs of the old GDFL were divided into the major league competition of the GFL and the minor league of the GDFL. South Barwon Football & Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Swans'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the southern suburb of Belmont, Victoria. The South Barwon teams currently compete in the Geelong Football Netball League, the major regional league in the region. The Bellarine Football Netball League (BFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in the Bellarine Peninsula region of Victoria, Australia. Established in 1971 as the Bellarine & District Football League, the competition was formed out of the ashes of the Polwarth Football League, which had six of its former teams join. The competition was renamed the Bellarine Football League in 1986, and finally the Bellarine Football Netball League in 2011 when the local netball competition was administratively aligned with the football competition for the first time.
