Jack Finlay
John Finlay (10 June 1889 – 30 September 1942) was an Irish athlete who played hurling for Laois in the 1910s and in later life was a politician. Finlay was born in Ballycuddy, County Laois in 1889. He had a love of hurling from a young age and soon joined his local club Ballygeehan. In 1913 Finlay won a Laois Junior Hurling Championship with the club. They moved to senior level the following year and proceeded to win five county championships in-a-row with Finlay as captain. After winning the county title in 1914 the club had a major say in the selection of the inter-county team for the following year. Finlay was chosen as captain and was joined by his brother Tom Finlay. That year Laois defeated Offaly, Kilkenny and Dublin to win the Leinster Championship. This victory set up an All-Ireland final meeting with Cork, who were red-hot favourites. Laois had no great hurling tradition and this was shown when Cork scored three goals. Jock Finlay
John Finlay (19 October 1882 – 31 March 1933) was a Scottish footballer who played as a left half for Rangers (where he played only once in the Scottish Football League in his first season as a professional), Airdrieonians (where he became an established top division regular over five years), and Newcastle United (where he was registered as a player for 15 years, though World War I interrupted his career and the last few seasons involved only a handful of appearances – by then he was also working as a trainer for the club, a position he held until 1930). John Baird Finlay
John Baird Finlay (January 29, 1929 – October 17, 2010) was a member of the House of Commons of Canada from 1993 to 2004. His career had been in the school system, as a teacher and superintendent. Finlay was born in 1929 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He attended John Wanless public school in Toronto (1934–36), then a PNEU school in Croydon. England in 1936. He returned to Toronto in 1937 and attended Hodgson public school until 1942 followed by University of Toronto Schools until 1947. He then studied at Victoria College, Toronto earning a Bachelor of Arts in 1952. His teaching career included terms at Upper Canada College from 1952 to 1954, then in Woodstock, Ontario from 1955 to 1964 except for the 1957–58 school year at Ingersoll District Collegiate Institute (IDCI). John Finlay (April 22, 1837 – November 13, 1910) was a Canadian politician. Born in Dummer Township, Peterborough County, Upper Canada, Finlay was educated in the Public Schools of Dummer. A manufacturer, Finlay was Councillor and Reeve of the Village of Norwood and County Councillor. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the electoral district of Peterborough East in the general elections of 1904. John Finlay (Dean Of Leighlin)
John Finlay (27 June 1842 – 12 June 1921) was Dean of Leighlin from 1895 until 1912. Finlay was educated at Trinity College, Dublin and ordained in 1867. He began his ecclesiastical career as a curate in Clonenagh. He was the incumbent at Lorum from 1873 to 1890 when he moved to Carlow. Upon his retirement he moved to Brackley House near Bawnboy, Co. Cavan. He was murdered by the IRA on 12 June 1921 for apparently objecting to his home being burned, to deny it being used to shelter security forces. Eleven members of the IRAs Cavan Brigade were arrested in connection with Finlays murder. John Finlay (poet)
John Finlay (1782–1810) was a Scottish poet. Biography Finlay was born in Glasgow in December 1782. He was educated in one of the academies at Glasgow, and at the age of fourteen entered the university, where he had as a classmate John Wilson (alias 'Christopher North'), who states that he was distinguished "above most of his contemporaries". The prospect of obtaining a situation in one of the public offices led him to visit London in 1807, and while there he contributed to the magazines some articles on antiquarian subjects. Not finding suitable employment he returned to Glasgow in 1808. He began to collect materials for a continuation of Warton's ''History of Poetry'', but in 1810 he left Glasgow to visit Professor Wilson at Ellerlay, Westmoreland; on the way he fell ill at Moffat, and died there on 8 December.
