John Ferguson (footballer, Born 1891)
John Ferguson (1891 – 23 October 1916) was a Scottish professional Association football, footballer who played as a right half in the Scottish Football League, Scottish League for Third Lanark A.C., Third Lanark and St Bernard's F.C., St Bernard's. Personal life Ferguson was born in Glasgow and brought up by an aunt in Aberfoyle, Stirling, Aberfoyle. He attended Callander High School and the University of Edinburgh. Ferguson served as a second lieutenant in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) during the First World War and was Mentioned in dispatches, mentioned in despatches. He was Killed in action, killed by a grenade near Flers, Somme, Flers during the Battle of Le Transloy#23 October, Battle of Le Transloy on 23 October 1916, in an action his Captain (armed forces), Captain believed was worthy of a posthumous Victoria Cross. Grenade
A grenade is an explosive weapon typically thrown by hand (also called hand grenade), but can also refer to a shell (explosive projectile) shot from the muzzle of a rifle (as a rifle grenade) or a grenade launcher.
