John Fairley
John Alexander Fairley FRTS (born 15 April 1938) is a British former television producer from Yorkshire. With William Allison he wrote the 1978 book ''The Monocled Mutineer'', made into a well-known 1986 BBC One controversial drama series, adapted by Alan Bleasdale. Early life He was born in Liverpool. He attended MerchantTaylor’s school in Crosby, Merseyside and then went to The Queen's College, Oxford. Career Newspapers He started at the '' Bristol Evening Post'' in 1963, then went to the ''London Evening Standard'' in 1964. Radio From 1965-68 he was a radio producer with BBC Radio. Yorkshire Television He worked for Yorkshire Television (now ITV Yorkshire). He was a television producer from 1968-78. He became Managing Director of Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television in 1993 until April 1995. He was replaced on 15 May 1995 by Bruce Gyngell, the former managing director from 1984-92 of TV-am. Royal Television Society
The Royal Television Society (RTS) is a British-based educational charity for the discussion, and analysis of television in all its forms, past, present, and future. It is the oldest television society in the world. It currently has fourteen regional and national centres in the UK, as well as a branch in the Republic of Ireland. History The group was formed as the Television Society on 7 September 1927, a time when television was still in its experimental stage. Regular high-definition (then defined as at least 200 lines) broadcasts did not even begin for another nine years until the BBC began its transmissions from Alexandra Palace in 1936. In addition to serving as a forum for scientists and engineers, the society published regular newsletters charting the development of the new medium. Ryedale
Ryedale is a non-metropolitan district in North Yorkshire, England. It is in the Vale of Pickering, a low-lying flat area of land drained by the River Derwent. The Vale's landscape is rural with scattered villages and towns. It has been inhabited continuously from the Mesolithic period. The economy is largely agricultural with light industry and tourism playing an increasing role. Towns include Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside, Malton, Norton-on-Derwent, and Pickering. Part of Ryedale lies within the North York Moors National Park. The A64 passes through Ryedale and villages such as Rillington. In the 2011 Census, the population of this primarily rural area of 150,659 hectares, the largest district in North Yorkshire, was 51,700. Bruce Gyngell AO (8 July 1929 – 7 September 2000) was an Australian television executive, active for more than 40 years in both Australian and UK television. Although Gyngell began his career in radio, in the 1950s he stepped into the arena of early television broadcasting, helping to set up Channel 9, the first commercial TV station in Australia. He was managing director of the breakfast television franchise holder TV-am in the United Kingdom from 1984 to 1992. In later life, he expressed an attraction to eastern ideas which ranged through Zen Buddhism, meditation and Insight philosophy. Early life Gyngell was born on 8 July 1929 in Melbourne.
