John Ewing (pastor)
John Ewing (1732–1802) was an American Presbyterian pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia from 1759 until his death in 1802 and served as the provost (president) of the University of Pennsylvania from 1780 to 1802. He also was a noted mathematician. Early life Ewing and his twin brother, James, were born on June 22, 1732, in Cecil County, Province of Maryland. Their parents, Nathaniel Ewing and Rachel Porter, had emigrated to America several years earlier from Northern Ireland. Ewing married Hannah Sergeant in 1758, and they had 12 children. Ewing was educated at a Pennsylvania prep school run by the Rev. Francis Alison, a respected classical scholar, and at the College of New Jersey (today's Princeton University), where he graduated with the class of 1754. After working as a tutor at Alison's school, Ewing joined the faculty at the College of Philadelphia (today's University of Pennsylvania) in 1758 as a professor of ethics. John Ewing (baseball)
John Ewing (June 1, 1863 – April 23, 1895), nicknamed "Long John", was an American professional baseball player. He was a pitcher over four seasons (1888–1891) with the Louisville Colonels, New York Giants of the Players' League, and New York Giants of the National League. Prior to that he was an outfielder in 1883 and 1884. In six years in the major leagues, Ewing played in four different leagues (National League, Union Association, American Association, Players' League). Ewing compiled a 53–63 career record in 129 appearances, with a 3.68 earned run average and 525 strikeouts. In 1891 he led the National League in ERA (a retroactive ranking; ERA was not tabulated in that era) while playing for New York. Ewing was used as a first base umpire in an American Association game on August 15, 1889. He was the brother of Hall of Fame catcher and infielder Buck Ewing. John Ewing (Indiana Politician)
John Ewing (May 19, 1789 – April 6, 1858) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Indiana. Early life He was born in County Cork, Ireland. As a child his family moved to the United States and settled in Baltimore, Maryland. In 1813 he moved to Vincennes, Indiana. He was involved in both business and in publishing a local paper. Judicial career From 1816 until 1820 he was an Associate Justice of the Circuit Court of Knox County, Indiana. He resigned from this post in 1820. In both 1816 and 1821, he ran unsuccessfully for the Indiana State Senate. In 1825 he was appointed a lieutenant colonel of the State Militia. He also began serving in the Indiana Senate that year. He continued to serve in the State Senate until 1833 when he was elected to the United States Congress. Six candidates vied for the seat he won, with only 20.94% of the vote. John Ewing (Australian Politician)
John Ewing (6 October 1863 – 30 November 1933) was an Australian politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1901 to 1904 and again from 1905 to 1908, and then served as a member of the Legislative Council from 1916 until his death. Ewing was born in Wollongong, New South Wales, to Elizabeth (née Thomson) and Thomas Campbell Ewing. His brothers, Norman Ewing and Sir Thomas Ewing, were also politicians. Ewing was educated at The King's School, Parramatta, and afterward worked as a surveyor in southern New South Wales. He came to Western Australia in 1896, initially working as a surveyor on the goldfields. John Hoge Ewing (October 5, 1796 – June 9, 1887) was an American politician from Pennsylvania who served as a Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Pennsylvania's 20th congressional district from 1845 to 1847. Biography Ewing, son of William Porter Ewing and Mary Conwell Ewing, was born near Brownsville, Pennsylvania in 1796. In 1814, he graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College) in Washington, Pennsylvania. He studied law, was admitted to the Bar in 1818, and commenced practice in Washington, Pennsylvania. He practiced law for only two years when he was awarded a contract (in partnership with his father) to construct the National Pike's road-bed between Brownsville and Hillsborough, Pennsylvania, which was completed in 1820. Ewing never returned to the active practice of law, but instead engaged in a variety of business and agricultural pursuits. John Ewing (born April 18, 1961) is the treasurer of Douglas County, Nebraska, USA. He is a member of the Democratic Party. In 2012, Ewing ran for the United States House of Representatives for Nebraska's 2nd District, but lost to incumbent Lee Terry. Education Ewing graduated from Omaha Northwest High School, attending the same high school as his future political opponent Lee Terry. Ewing received a B.S. in criminal justice and business administration from the University of Nebraska, Omaha. In 1986, he also earned a master's degree in urban studies there. Career Ewing was an officer with the Omaha police department for 24 years, rising to the rank of deputy police chief. He was elected the treasurer of Douglas County in 2006, and re-elected in 2010.
