''John Ericsson, Victor of Hampton Roads'' (Swedish: ''John Ericsson - segraren vid Hampton Roads'') is a 1937 Swedish historical film, historical drama film directed by Gustaf Edgren and starring Victor Sjöström, Märta Ekström and Anders Henrikson.Wallengren p.127 It is a biopic of the nineteenth century Swedish engineer and inventor John Ericsson, known for his work in Britain and the United States. The title refers to the 1862 Battle of Hampton Roads in the American Civil War, which featured the ''USS Monitor'' designed by Ericsson. It was shot at the Råsunda Studios in Stockholm. The film's sets were designed by the art director Arne Åkermark. It was produced and distributed by Svensk Filmindustri. John Ericsson (born Johan Ericsson; July 31, 1803 – March 8, 1889) was a Swedish-American inventor. He was active in England and the United States. Ericsson collaborated on the design of the railroad steam locomotive ''Novelty'', which competed in the Rainhill Trials on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, which were won by inventor George Stephenson's (1781-1848), ''Rocket''. Carl Barcklind (1 June 1873 – 21 August 1945) was a Swedish stage actor, stage and film actor. Biography Carl Vilhelm Barcklind was born at Sala in Västmanland County, Sweden. He made his debut as an opera singer in 1907 at the Oscarsteatern. He was associated with Albert Ranft as an actor in operettas in his theaters 1898–1922. Barcklind was director of Stora Teatern in Gothenburg 1925–1927. He toured the United States from 1927 to 1928 and was employed by the Dramaten in 1930. Hilda Teresia Borgström (13 October 1871 – 2 January 1953) was a Swedish stage and film actress. Biography Born in 1871 in Stockholm, Borgström made her film debut in 1912. She starred in leading parts in Victor Sjöström's silent films ''Ingeborg Holm'' (aka ''Margaret Day'') (1913) and '' Körkarlen'' (aka ''The Phantom Carriage/The Stroke of Midnight/Thy Soul Shall Bear Witness'') in 1921. Filmstaden was a film studio situated in Råsunda, Solna Municipality in Stockholm, Sweden. History Filmstaden was once one of the most modern film studios in Europe. It was built in 1919–1920 on the basis of designs by Swedish architect Ebbe Crone (1885-1960). It was owned and operated by SF Studios (''Svensk Filmindustri''), the main Swedish film producer at the time. Some 400 movies have been created at Filmstaden.
