John Engelberger
John Albert Engelberger (born October 18, 1976) is a former American football defensive end. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the second round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He played college football at Virginia Tech. Engelberger has also played for the Denver Broncos. Early years Engelberger lettered in football for two years at Robert E. Lee High School in Springfield, Va., where he played tight end and linebacker. He caught 19 passes for 422 yards with four touchdowns while adding 94 tackles and three sacks as a linebacker as a senior. College career Engelberger was a Second-team All-America and a First-team All-Big East Conference choice following a senior season at Virginia Tech that saw him record 53 tackles (32 solo) and seven sacks. Defensive End
Defensive end (DE) is a defensive position in the sport of gridiron football. This position has designated the players at each end of the defensive line, but changes in formation (American football), formations over the years have substantially changed how the position is played. History Early formations, with six- and seven-man line defense, seven-man lines, used the end as a containment player, whose job was first to prevent an "end run" around his position, then secondarily to force plays inside. When most teams adopted a five-man line, two different styles of end play developed: "crashing" ends, who rushed into the backfield to disrupt plays, and "stand-up" or "waiting" ends, who played the more traditional containment style. The league went back to an even number of teams with the addition of the Houston Texans; the league has remained static with 32 teams since. The league permanently moved the first week of the regular season to the weekend following Labor Day. In the wake of the September 11 attacks, the NFL's week 2 games (September 16 and 17) were postponed and rescheduled to the weekend of January 6 and 7, 2002. The 2000 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 51st season in the National Football League and their 55th overall. Jerry Rice entered the 2000 season as the oldest player in the league at the wide receiver position. At the end of the year, however, with the emergence of Terrell Owens, Rice decided to leave the team after sixteen seasons to join the Raiders. Running back Charlie Garner would join Rice in Oakland. The 49ers improved from 4–12 in 1999 to 6–10, but still suffered back-to-back losing seasons for the first time since their four consecutive losing seasons from 1977 to 1980.
