John Du Plessis Langrishe
Lt Col John Du Plessis Langrishe FRSE DSO (11 September 1883 – 28 February 1947) was a British physician, soldier and landowner. As a trained physician he was a specialist in public health. Life He was born on 11 September 1883 to Amitia (“Amelia”) Sneade Brown and Richard Langrishe (1834-1922). He was the great-great-grandson of Baronet Hercules Langrishe. He studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin and graduated MA MBChB around 1905. In the First World War he served with distinction in the Royal Army Medical Corps, winning the Distinguished Service Order in 1918. After the war he remained in the RAMC and lectured in Tropical Hygiene and Public Health at the University of Edinburgh and served as Chairman of the Edinburgh University Joint Recruiting Board. In 1931 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. His proposers were Francis Albert Eley Crew, James Hartley Ashworth, Percy Samuel Lelean and Thomas Jones Mackie. Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (FRSE) is an award granted to individuals that the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland's national academy of science and letters, judged to be "eminently distinguished in their subject". James Hartley Ashworth
James Hartley Ashworth FRS FRSE DSc SZS (2 May 1874 – 4 February 1936) was a British marine zoologist. Life See He was born on 2, May 1874, in Accrington in Lancashire, the only son of James Ashworth. He spent most of his early life in Burnley, attending the Carlton Road School there. He appears to have befriended Dr James MacKenzie during his youth, due to MacKenzie's role as the family GP, and his interest in science was awakened. MacKenzie appears to have had a mentoring role during his teenage years. Ashworth was encouraged to train, and went to Manchester to study Chemistry at Owen's College. Here he quickly found a new interest and changed to study Zoology. He then moved to London University where he received a BSc with Honours in Zoology and Botany in 1895. Colonel Percy Samuel Lelean (21 July 1871 – 6 November 1956) was a Canadian-born surgeon who specialised in issues of Public Health. He served with distinction in the First World War. Life He was born in Canada on 21 July 1871 the son of William Cox Lelean. He studied medicine at Hart House in Canada then sent to UK to St Mary's Hospital, London. In the First Boer War, he volunteered for the Army Medical Services and saw action throughout South Africa, winning the Queen's Medal four times. Staying in Africa he served on the Anglo-French Boundary Commission in 1903, considering international boundaries from the River Niger to Lake Chad. He then served as an army surgeon in India until 1912. He served as a Major in the Royal Army Medical Corps during the First World War. He was four times Mentioned in Dispatches. Francis Albert Eley Crew FRS FRSE LLD (2 March 1886 – 26 May 1973) was an English animal geneticist. He was a pioneer in his field leading to the University of Edinburgh’s place as a world leader in the science of animal genetics. He was the first Director of the Institute of Animal Breeding and the first Professor of Animal Genetics. He is said to have laid the foundations of medical genetics. Sir Hercules Langrishe, 1st Baronet (1729 – 1 February 1811) was an Irish politician. Life and career He was the only son of Robert Langrishe of Knocktopher, County Kilkenny and Anne Whitby, daughter of Jonathan Whitby of Kilcreggan, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated B.A. in 1763. He was a commissioner of barracks 1766–74, supervisor of accounts 1767–75, commissioner of revenue 1774–1801, and commissioner of excise 1780–1801. After the Act of Union 1800 he played no further role in politics. He was first elected to represent Knocktopher (Parliament of Ireland constituency), Knocktopher in the Irish House of Commons in May 1761, and sat until he resigned his seat in March 1800.
