John Alexander Dowie (25 May 18479 March 1907) was a Scottish-Australian minister known as an evangelist and faith healer. He began his career as a conventional minister in South Australia. After becoming an evangelist and faith healer, he immigrated with his family to the United States in 1888, first settling in San Francisco, where he expanded his faith healing into a mail order business. He moved to Chicago in time to take advantage of the crowds attracted to the 1893 World's Fair. After developing a huge faith healing business in Chicago, with multiple homes and businesses, including a publishing house, to keep his thousands of followers, he bought an expansive amount of land north of the city to set up a private community. There Dowie founded the city of Zion, Illinois, where he personally owned all the land and established many businesses. John Stuart Dowie AM (15 January 1915 – 19 March 2008) was an Australian painter, sculptor and teacher. His work includes over 50 public sculpture commissions, including the "Three Rivers" fountain in Victoria Square, "Alice" in Rymill Park, the " Victor Richardson Gates" at Adelaide Oval and the "Sir Ross & Sir Keith Smith Memorial" at Adelaide Airport. History Dowie was born in the Adelaide suburb of Prospect, a son of Charles Stuart Dowie (c. 1874–1937) and his wife Gertrude Phillis Dowie, née Davey (1881–1956), who married in 1910. His siblings were David Lincoln Dowie (1911–1991), Jean Phillis Dowie (1913–2010), and Donald Alexander "Don" Dowie (1917–2016). The family moved to the leafy suburb of Dulwich in 1917. He attended Rose Park primary school and Adelaide High School before studying architecture at the University of Adelaide and painting at the South Australian School of Art; teachers included Ivor Hele and Marie Tuck.

John Dowie (footballer)
John Dowie (12 December 1955 – 22 January 2016) was a football midfielder, who played in the Football League and Scottish Football League during the 1970s and 1980s. Dowie was at Rangers as a schoolboy but did not make the grade there and moved to Fulham in 1973, being at the club when they reached the 1975 FA Cup Final, although he did not play in the game. In 1977, he left to join Celtic, making his debut for them on 10 September 1977 against Rangers. He also appeared for the Bhoys against Rangers in the 1978 Scottish League Cup Final. He did not make an appearance for the club in 1978-79 and left to join Doncaster Rovers in April 1979. Dowie played a total of 25 senior games for Rovers, scoring 2 goals. John Dowie (born 3 August 1950 in Birmingham) is a British comedian, musician and writer, often viewed as a pioneer of alternative comedy. He began performing stand-up comedy in 1969. Career Described as an "idiosyncratic original" and "lone pioneer", Dowie's "arthouse proto-alternative" work mixed parody, fantasy, impersonations and taboo topics. His innovative comic style led him to being seen by many comedians that followed such as Alexei Sayle, Tony Allen, Mark Steel, and Jeremy Hardy as a precursor to the alternative comedy wave that arrived a few years later., with comedy impresario Malcolm Hardee noting that Dowie's work predated even the founding of the Comedy Store. John Dowie's Tavern
John Dowie's Tavern was an 18th/19th century tavern in Edinburgh, Scotland, frequented by a number of well-known persons. Its proximity to the Edinburgh law courts also meant it was a haunt of Edinburgh lawyers and judges. History John Dowie took over a tavern named "The Mermaid" on Liberton Wynd, off Edinburgh's Royal Mile, close to the Law Courts and St Giles Cathedral around 1770. The building held a date-stone of 1728 over the entrance. Dowie was a convivial host, and despite the small rooms and lack of daylight, it was a popular place, due to both Dowie himself and the quality of the beers. Liberton Wynd was a steep and narrow alley leading from the High Street to the Cowgate.
