John Dougherty (Missouri Politician)
John Dougherty (February 25, 1857 – August 1, 1905) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. Born in Iatan, Missouri, Dougherty moved with his parents the same year to Liberty, Missouri. He attended the public schools and William Jewell College, Liberty, Mo,. He studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1889 and commenced practice at Liberty, Missouri. Dougherty was elected city attorney of Liberty, Missouri, in 1881 and served five years. He was editor and proprietor of the Liberty Tribune 1885–1888. Dougherty was elected prosecuting attorney of Clay County, Missouri, in 1888 and served six years. He was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination in 1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress. Dougherty was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-sixth, Fifty-seventh, and Fifty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1899 – March 3, 1905). He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1904. Missouri's 3rd Congressional District
Missouri's third congressional district is in the eastern and central portion of the state. It surrounds but does not include St Louis City. Its current representative is Republican Blaine Luetkemeyer. The district took its current form in 2013, when Missouri lost a congressional district as a result of the 2010 census. At that time, much of the northern portion of the old 9th district was added to the 6th district, while most of the remaining territory became the new 3rd district. The current 3rd district is primarily exurban and rural in character and is the second-wealthiest of Missouri's congressional districts, after the neighboring 2nd district. From 1953 to 2013, the 3rd had been located in the southern portion of the St. Louis area, including the southern third of St. Louis City, and had a dramatically different political history from the current 3rd. Iatan, Missouri
Iatan is a village in Platte County, Missouri within the United States. The population was 69 at the 2010 census. It is within the Kansas City metropolitan area. The community is said to derive its name from Iatan, a chief of the Otoe tribe who supposedly derived his name from battles with the Comanche who were sometimes also referred to as Iatan. The town site was platted in 1842. A post office called Iatan was established in 1855, and remained in operation until 1964. Iatan, first settled by John Dougherty in 1837, was one of the first communities to be established after the Platte Purchase allowed white settlement on former Native American land (which was proclaimed in February 1837). It was initially an important trading port on the Missouri River but was soon overtaken by Weston, Missouri five miles (8 km) to the south and St. Joseph, Missouri to the north. Liberty, Missouri
Liberty is a city in and the county seat of Clay County, Missouri, United States and is a suburb of Kansas City, located in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 United States Census the population was 30,167. Liberty is home to William Jewell College. History Liberty was settled in 1822, and shortly later became the county seat of Clay County. The city was named for the American concept of liberty. In 1830, David Rice Atchison established a law office in Liberty. He was joined three years later by colleague Alexander William Doniphan. The two argued cases defending the rights of Mormon settlers in Jackson County, served Northwest Missouri in Missouri's General Assembly, and labored for the addition of the Platte Purchase to Missouri's boundaries. Clay County, Missouri
Clay County is located in the U.S. state of Missouri and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the county had a population of 253,335, making it the fifth-most populous county in Missouri. Its county seat is Liberty. The county was organized January 2, 1822, and named in honor of U.S. Representative Henry Clay from Kentucky, later a member of the United States Senate and United States Secretary of State.
