John Dick (footballer, Born 1876)
John Dick (29 January 1876 – 14 September 1932) was a Scottish football player and manager. Born in Eaglesham, Renfrewshire, Dick first played for Airdrieonians, but in 1898 he was signed by London side Woolwich Arsenal as one of manager William Elcoat's many Scottish signings, with reserve striker James Devlin going the other way. A strong muscular centre half (in those days the centre half played in midfield), Dick immediately made his debut for Arsenal on the first day of the season (against Luton Town on 3 September 1898), and he only missed four games of his first season. Dick was noted for his formidable stamina (he was a cross-country runner as well and once recorded a time of six-and-a-half miles in 33 minutes, 45 seconds), and was a near ever-present in the Woolwich Arsenal side for the next six seasons; he missed only one game in 1899–1900, and although not a prolific goalscorer (he only scored thirteen times in his entire Arsenal career), he did score twice in ... John Dick (footballer, Born 1930)
John Hart Dick (19 March 1930 – September 2000) was a Scottish footballer who played for Crittall Athletic, West Ham United, Brentford, Gravesend & Northfleet and a single appearance for Scotland. Career Born in Glasgow, he became a prolific goalscorer and became the first West Ham United player to play for the Scottish national team. He joined West Ham from Crittall Athletic while on national service. Between 1953 and 1962, Dick made 364 appearances for the club, mainly at inside left. He scored 176 goals for West Ham in all competitions, placing him joint third on the club's all-time top scorers list. He eventually moved to Brentford for an incoming record £17,500 transfer fee. He was later in charge of West Ham Juniors. Dick died in September 2000. International career Dick made one appearance for Scotland, against England at Wembley Stadium in 1959. John Dick (1788 – April 23, 1824) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Louisiana, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana and the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. Education and career Born in 1788 in County Tyrone, Ireland, Dick read law in 1811. He entered private practice in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1812 to 1815. He was United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana from 1815 to 1821. Federal judicial service Dick was nominated by President James Monroe on March 1, 1821, to a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Louisiana vacated by Judge Dominic Augustin Hall. John Dick (1764–1833) was a Scottish minister and theological writer. Life He was born on 10 October 1764 at Aberdeen, where his father was minister of the associate congregation of seceders. His mother was Helen Tolmie, daughter of Captain Tolmie of Aberdeen. Educated at the grammar school and King's College, Aberdeen, he studied for the ministry of the Secession church, under John Brown of Haddington. In 1785, immediately after being licensed as a probationer, Dick was called by the congregation of the newly built United Secession Church in Slateford, near Edinburgh, and ordained to the ministry there. This church still exists at the foot of Lanark Road but is hidden behind other buildings. At Slateford, Dick began to take an active share in the business of his church. He vindicated the use of confessions, but inculcated the duty of the church to be tolerant of minor disagreements. John Dick (June 17, 1794 – May 29, 1872) was an American politician and judge. He represented Pennsylvania as a Whig, a member of the Opposition Party and a Republican in the United States House of Representatives. Biography John Dick was born on June 17, 1794, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With his parents, he moved to Meadville, Pennsylvania while less than a year old, in December 1794. He attended and received his education at the common schools. He served as major of the First Battalion of the Pennsylvania Militia in 1821. Dick then served as colonel of the First Regiment in 1825 before becoming brigadier general of the Second Brigade, Sixteenth Division of the Pennsylvania Militia in 1831. After his militia service, he moved into mercantile business and banking, establishing the banking house J.&J.R. Dick in 1850. John Henry Dick (May 12, 1919 – September 22, 1995) was an American naturalist and wildlife artist who specialized in birds. Early life Dick was born in at his parents' townhouse in Brooklyn, New York on May 12, 1919. His parents were William Karl Dick and Madeleine Talmage Force. Madeleine survived the sinking where her first husband John Jacob Astor IV died, and had a posthumously born son named John Jacob Astor VI with him. Dick also had an elder full brother named William Force Dick. He grew up in Manhattan and frequently visited the American Museum of Natural History. His great-grandfather, William Dick, was an early investor in the National Sugar Refining Co., of which his father was a director. Dick studied at the Yale School of Art and joined the United States Air Force during World War II, visiting the South Pacific Islands. When the war came to an end he was on Iwo Jima.
