John Dewar, Sr.
John Dewar (6 January 1805 – 22 January 1880) was a Scottish businessman from Perth who founded the John Dewar & Sons Scotch whisky distillery in 1846. Personal life In 1845, Dewar married Jane Gow, with whom he had the following children: # John (1849–1852) # Agnes (1850–1852) # James Gow (1852–1922) # Alexander (1854–1855) # John Alexander (1856–1929) # Charles (1858–1933) # Arthur (1860–1917) # Thomas Robert (1864–1930) On his death, sons Tommy and John took over management of the business. Wellshill Cemetery
Wellshill Cemetery is a 19th-century cemetery in the Scottish city of Perth, Perth and Kinross. Located on Feus Road, the cemetery is still operational and is under the control of Perth and Kinross Council. In general the grounds are well-landscaped and well-maintained but with some minor vandalism in the central sections. Unlike many council cemeteries stones are not laid flat if considered dangerous but instead are marked with caution tapes. History The cemetery was opened in 1844 as a private cemetery. The original section and original entrance gates lie to the south-east. A parochial (free section) was added to the north around 1860 and further private sections added to the west (now the centre) and far north. A modern section was added by the Council on former Jeanfield recreation ground to the west, and is known as Jeanfield Cemetery. Perth (Scottish English, locally: ; gd, Peairt ) is a city in central Scotland, on the banks of the River Tay. It is the administrative centre of Perth and Kinross council area and the historic county town of Perthshire. It had a population of about 47,430 in 2018. John Dewar, 1st Baron Forteviot
John Alexander Dewar, 1st Baron Forteviot (6 June 1856 – 23 November 1929) was a Scottish businessman, elder son of the founder of Dewar's Scotch Whisky and a Liberal Member of Parliament. He is buried with his family in the family plot at Aberdalgie just west of Perth, near the family seat of Dupplin. Family John Dewar Jr. was the son of John Dewar, Sr. and Jane Gow, and older brother of Thomas Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar. He married Elsie Johann (Joan) Tod (fourth daughter of Lord Forteviot of Dupplin) in 1884, however, she died in 1899. In 1905, he married Margaret Elizabeth Holland, daughter of Henry Holland. Arthur Dewar, Lord Dewar KC (14 March 1860 – 14 June 1917) was a British politician and judge who served as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Edinburgh South as well as Solicitor General for Scotland and later a Senator of the College of Justice. Life He was born in Perth, the fourth son of John Dewar, Sr. the distiller and founder of John Dewar & Sons. Thomas Robert "Tommy" Dewar, 1st Baron Dewar (6 January 1864 – 11 April 1930) was a Scottish whisky distiller who, along with his brother John Dewar, built their family label, Dewar's, into an international success. Dewar's is also the world's most awarded blended Scotch whisky with more than 1,000 medals earned in international competitions. History The Dewar's whisky brand was created by John Dewar, Sr. in 1846. Under the control of his two sons, John A.
