John A. Davenport (September 11, 1904 – June 8, 1987) was an American journalist and writer, the editor of Barron's, a longtime editor of Fortune and a career-long exponent of the moral and economic case for free markets. Davenport was born in Philadelphia, the son of Russell W. Davenport, Sr., a vice president of Bethlehem Steel Corp., and Cornelia Whipple Farnum. He attended the horsey, orange-blossom redolent Thacher School in Ojai, California (a happy cultural shock for a boy from the Philadelphia Mainline), followed by a year at Deep Springs College. He graduated from Yale University in 1926 and joined the staff of the ''New York World''in 1927, where he remained until 1930. A bout of tuberculosis interrupted Davenport's journalistic career, but his time at a Saranac Lake, N.Y. sanitorium was not entirely wasted. Otis Blackwell (February 16, 1931 – May 6, 2002) was an American songwriter whose work influenced rock and roll. His compositions include "Fever" (recorded by Little Willie John), "Great Balls of Fire" and " Breathless" (recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis), "Don't Be Cruel", " All Shook Up" and " Return to Sender" (with Winfield Scott; recorded by Elvis Presley), and " Handy Man" (recorded by Jimmy Jones). John Davenport (died 6 January 1941) was a British trade unionist. Davenport came to prominent as an activist in the United Order of General Labourers (UOGL), working alongside Bob Merry. He was identified by Ben Tillett as one of the most able officials in the various unions of general workers. In 1913, he became the general secretary of the UOGL,Arthur Marsh and Victoria Ryan, ''Historical Directory of British Trade Unions'', vol.3, p.129 also representing it at the Trades Union Congress (TUC). He was elected to the General Council of the TUC in 1921 but, the following year he took the UOGL into the new Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU), and thereby became ineligible to defend his seat on the general council. In 1924, Davenport was re-elected to the General Council of the TUC, this time as a representative of the TGWU. John Davenport (April 9, 1597May 30, 1670) was an English Puritan clergyman and co-founder of the American colony of New Haven. Early life Born in Coventry, Warwickshire, England to a wealthy family, Davenport was educated at Oxford University. He matriculated at Merton College in 1613 but migrated to Magdalen Hall two years later, probably because of its reputation at the time for its Calvinist and Puritan sympathies. However, Davenport did not complete his degree during this time, returning to Oxford in 1625 when he took the degrees of BD and MA. His father was Henry Davenport (1567 – May 29, 1627), draper, alderman, and mayor of Coventry, son of Edward Davenport, mayor of Coventry (1551-2).
