John Dalrymple, 11th Earl Of Stair
John Hew North Gustav Henry Hamilton-Dalrymple, 11th Earl of Stair (12 June 1848 – 2 December 1914), known as Viscount Dalrymple 1864-1903, was a British army officer and nobleman. Family Hamilton-Dalrymple was the son of John Hamilton Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair and his wife, Louisa Jane Henrietta Emily de Franquetot. He married Susan Harriet Grant-Suttie, daughter of Sir James Grant-Suttie, 6th Bt. and Lady Susan Harriet Innes-Ker, on 10 April 1878; they were divorced in 1905. Cockburn Association
The Cockburn Association (Edinburgh's Civic Trust) is one of the world's oldest architectural conservation and urban planning monitoring organisations, founded in 1875. The Scottish judge Henry Cockburn (1779–1854) was a prominent campaigner to protect and enhance the beauty of Edinburgh, notably resisting construction of new buildings on the south side of Princes Street. The association was founded in 1875 to continue the legacy of his work. Since 1991, the organisation has been responsible for Edinburgh's annual Doors Open Day scheme. The first major campaign by the association was to resist the removal of trees at Bruntsfield Links and the association has campaigned for the retention and improvement of Edinburgh's open and green spaces ever since. Earl of Stair is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1703 for the lawyer and statesman John Dalrymple, 2nd Viscount of Stair. Dalrymple's father, James Dalrymple, had been a prominent lawyer; having served as Lord President of the Court of Session, he was created a baronet, of Stair in the County of Ayr, in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in 1664, and in 1690 he was raised to the Peerage of Scotland as Lord Glenluce and Stranraer and Viscount of Stair. The son, John Dalrymple, actively supported William III's claim to the throne and served as Secretary of State for Scotland. However, he was forced to resign after he authorised the massacre of Glencoe of 1692. He was made Lord Newliston, Glenluce and Stranraer and Viscount of Dalrymple, at the same time as he was given the earldom, also in the Peerage of Scotland. John James Hamilton Dalrymple, 12th Earl of Stair, (1 February 1879 – 4 November 1961), styled Viscount Dalrymple between 1903 and 1914, was a Scottish soldier and Conservative Party, later Unionist Party, politician. Military and political career The son of John Dalrymple, 11th Earl of Stair, Dalrymple was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Scots Guards on 16 February 1898, and promoted to lieutenant on 11 October 1899. He fought in the Second Boer War, where he took part in the march to occupy the Boer capitals Bloemfontein (March 1900) and Pretoria (June 1900), and was present at the successive Battles of Diamond Hill (11-12 June 1900) and Bergendal (21-27 August 1900). Following the end of hostilities in early June 1902, he left Cape Town on board the ''SS Orotava'', and arrived at Southampton the next month. He later fought in the First World War. Grant-Suttie Baronets
The Suttie, later Grant-Suttie Baronetcy, of Balgone in the County of Haddington, is a title originally created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia. It was created on 5 May 1702 for George Suttie. The third and fourth Baronets both sat as Members of Parliament for Haddingtonshire. The latter assumed the additional surname of Grant on succeeding to the estates of his aunt, Janet, Countess of Hyndford, daughter of William Grant, Lord Prestongrange. Francis Grant-Suttie, second son of the fifth Baronet and grandfather of the eighth Baronet, was a captain in the Royal Navy. A large number of the family lie buried in the old parish churchyard of North Berwick. Major (Maj) is a military rank which is used by both the British Army and Royal Marines. The rank is superior to captain and subordinate to lieutenant colonel. The insignia for a major is a crown. The equivalent rank in the Royal Navy is lieutenant commander, and squadron leader in the Royal Air Force. Ayrshire (Earl Of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry
The Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry was a Regiment of the British Yeomanry and is now an armoured Squadron of the Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry (SNIY), part of the British Army Reserve. It is the Lowlands of Scotland's only Royal Armoured Corps Unit and has an unbroken history stretching back to the 1790s. The squadron is part of 51st (Scottish) Brigade within the Army's Support Command. The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry is the only yeomanry regiment that serves in the reconnaissance role, equipped with the Wolf Land Rover with Weapons Mount Installation Kit (WMIK) and with HMG (heavy machine gun 12.7mm L1A1) and GMPG (General purpose machine gun 7.62mm L7A2).
