John Dalrymple, 10th Earl Of Stair
John Hamilton Dalrymple, 10th Earl of Stair, KT (1 April 1819 – 3 December 1903), styled Viscount Dalrymple from 1853 until 1864, was a Scottish peer and politician, who served as Governor of the Bank of Scotland for thirty-three years. Biography He was the eldest son of North Dalrymple, 9th Earl of Stair, and married Louisa-Jane-Henrietta-Emily, eldest daughter of the 3rd Duc de Coigny, in 1846. Cockburn Association
The Cockburn Association (Edinburgh's Civic Trust) is one of the world's oldest architectural conservation and urban planning monitoring organisations, founded in 1875. The Scottish judge Henry Cockburn (1779–1854) was a prominent campaigner to protect and enhance the beauty of Edinburgh, notably resisting construction of new buildings on the south side of Princes Street. The association was founded in 1875 to continue the legacy of his work. Since 1991, the organisation has been responsible for Edinburgh's annual Doors Open Day scheme. The first major campaign by the association was to resist the removal of trees at Bruntsfield Links and the association has campaigned for the retention and improvement of Edinburgh's open and green spaces ever since. The association successfully resisted plans to build an inner city motorway system in Edinburgh in 1965. Archibald Kennedy, 2nd Marquess of Ailsa, KT (25 August 1816 – 20 March 1870) was a Scottish peer and soldier. Life Born at Dunottar, he was the eldest son of Archibald Kennedy, Earl of Cassilis, himself the oldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa, and his wife Eleanor, daughter of Alexander Allardyce. His father having predeceased him in 1832, Kennedy succeeded to his grandfather's titles in 1846. Eleanor as Marchioness was involved with Catharine Tait's ''Ladies Diocesan Association'' visiting the poor in the ''City Road Workhouse''. Kennedy served in the British Army as a lieutenant in the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own). This is a list of people who have served as Lord Lieutenant of Wigtown, part of the Dumfries and Galloway council area of south-west Scotland. Prior to 1975 the lieutenancy area corresponded to the historic county of Wigtownshire. William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, (26 June 182417 December 1907) was a British mathematician, mathematical physicist and engineer born in Belfast. Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow for 53 years, he did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics, and did much to unify the emerging discipline of physics in its contemporary form. He received the Royal Society's Copley Medal in 1883, was its president 1890–1895, and in 1892 was the first British scientist to be elevated to the House of Lords. Absolute temperatures are stated in units of kelvin in his honour. Chancellor Of The University Of Glasgow
The Chancellor is the titular head of the University of Glasgow and President of the General Council, by whom they are elected. The office is intended to be held for life. Their principal duty is to confer degrees upon those presented to them by the Senate, although this role is usually carried out by the Vice-Chancellor, the appointment of whom is the Chancellor's second-most important duty. The current Chancellor is Dame Katherine Grainger, the first woman to hold the office. History From the University's establishment in 1451, the office was held by the Archbishop of Glasgow, except in the case of Lord Blantyre, who held all the powers of the Archbishop as 'Lord of Glasgow'.
