Vermel Marie Whalen (née Scott; June 28, 1928 – March 13, 2013) was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, serving a Cleveland area district from 1986 to 1998. Whelan was born in Portageville, Missouri and went to the local high school there. She moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Whelan went to Dyke College, University of Georgia, and Cleveland State University Cleveland State University (CSU) is a public research university in Cleveland, Ohio. The Ohio House of Representatives is the lower house of the Ohio General Assembly, the state legislature of the U.S. state of Ohio; the other house of the bicameral legislature being the Ohio Senate. The House of Representatives first met in Chillicothe on March 3, 1803, under the later superseded state constitution of that year. In 1816, the capital was moved to Columbus, where it is located today. Members are limited to four successive two-year elected terms (terms are considered successive if they are separated by less than four years). Black is a racialized classification of people, usually a political and skin color-based category for specific populations with a mid to dark brown complexion. Cancer is a group of diseases involving abnormal cell growth with the potential to invade or spread to other parts of the body. These contrast with benign tumors, which do not spread. Possible signs and symptoms include a lump, abnormal bleeding, prolonged cough, unexplained weight loss, and a change in bowel movements. While these symptoms may indicate cancer, they can also have other causes. Over 100 types of cancers affect humans. Tobacco use is the cause of about 22% of cancer deaths.
