John Curtis (burgess)
John Curtis or Curtys () was a North American Colonial British planter and politician who served one term in the House of Burgesses. Early and family life Thomas Curtis sailed from England to the Jamestown colony. He lived in what had become Elizabeth City County, and speculated in real estate throughout what had become the Virginia colony. He had several children by his second wife, Averilla, including John. Career John Curtis served as a third burgess representing Lancaster County in the 1659-1660 Virginia General Assembly session, alongside major landowners and legislative veterans John Carter and Henry Corbyn (or Corbin). John Curtice
Sir John Kevin Curtice (born 10 December 1953) is a British political scientist who is currently professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde and senior research fellow at the National Centre for Social Research. He is particularly interested in electoral behaviour and researching political and social attitudes. He took a keen interest in the debate about Scottish independence. John Thomas Curtis
John Thomas Curtis (September 20, 1913 – June 7, 1961) was an American botanist and plant ecologist. He is particularly known for his lasting contribution to the development of numerical methods in ecology. Together with J. Roger Bray, he developed the method of polar ordination (now known as Bray-Curtis ordination) with its inherent distance measure, the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity. Curtis completed his Ph.D. in botany at the University of Wisconsin in 1937. He remained affiliated with that university for the remainder of his career, except through 1942–1945, when he served as research director of the Société Haïtiano-Américaine de Développement Agricole. Both in 1942 and in 1956, he was awarded Guggenheim Fellowships. In 1951 he was made full professor of botany at the University of Wisconsin. John Green Curtis (October 29, 1844 – September 21, 1913) was an American physiologist who spent most of his career at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Curtis was one of the founding members of the American Physiological Society, and hosted its first meeting in his Columbia laboratory space. Early life and education Curtis was born on October 29, 1844, in New York City, New York. He attended Harvard College and received his bachelor's degree in 1866 and his master's degree in 1869. He received his M.D. in 1870 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, then a loose affiliate of Columbia University not integrated fully into the school until 1891. John Curtis (3 September 1791 – 6 October 1862) was an English entomologist and illustrator. Biography Curtis was born in Norwich to Frances and Charles Morgan Curtis. Charles Morgan died before his son had reached the age of 4 years. His mother, Frances, had a passion for flowers and was a professional flower grower. She encouraged her son to study natural history with a young local naturalist, Richard Walker (1791–1870). At the age of 16 John became an apprentice at a local lawyer's office in Norwich but devoted his spare time to studying and drawing insects and, with insect collecting becoming a growing craze, he found he could make a living selling the specimens he found. In 1790 he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Academy ''A View of Netley Abbey'', and was an occasional exhibitor in the following years. In 1797 he departed from his usual style, exhibiting a picture of the ''HMS Indefatigable (1784), Indefatigable'' and ''HMS Amazon (1773), Amazon'' frigates under Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, Sir Edward Pellew engaging ''Les Droits de l'Homme'', a French seventy-four. John Curtis (15 March 1880 – 11 July 1962) was an Irish missionary of the Anglican Church. He was born in Dublin on 15 March 1880, educated at Trinity College, Dublin ( Trinity Master of Arts ) and ordained in 1904. He was a curate at Christ Church, Leeson Park in his home city after which he joined the Dublin University Mission to Fukien; he married Eda Bryan-Brown, a fellow missionary who was also a doctor. He was a Temporary Chaplain to the Forces in 1917-18 serving in Salonika He was Bishop of Chekiang, China, from 1929 to 1949, during which period the Nationalist, Communist and Japanese armies fought over the country. On his return to England he was made Vicar of Wilden, Stourport, and retired in 1957. The Bishop and his wife had two children.
