John Cunningham (officer)
John Cunningham was an Anglo-Irish soldier known for his command of an aborted attempt to relieve the city of Derry during the 1689 Siege. His failure led to his dismissal and replacement by William Stewart. Some sources refer to him as Thomas Cunningham, but the vast majority called him John. Cunningham spent his much of his youth in Derry and visited several times as an adult. It is reported that at the time of the Siege he still had a brother living in the area who may have taken part in the city's defence. As a Captain serving in the English Army during the reign of James II, Cunningham was a supporter of the Whig opposition. By May 1688 he wanted to resign his commission as he strongly opposed the King's religious reforms and did not want to be involved in what he saw as the destruction of the Church of England. John Cunningham (bishop)
John Cunningham (22 February 1938 – 1 December 2021) was a Roman Catholic prelate who served as Bishop of Galloway from 2004 to 2014. Biography Cunningham was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, on 22 February 1938. He was educated at St Mary's College, Blairs and St. Peter's Seminary, Cardross. Later he was a student of the Scots College, Rome from where he attended the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained to the priesthood on 29 June 1961. From 1967 to 1981, he was extramural professor of Canon Law at St Peter's College, Glasgow. He was parish priest at St Patrick's, Greenock from 1992–2004 and was appointed Papal Chaplain in 1994. From 1997 to 2004 he was Vicar General of the Diocese of Paisley. He was made a Prelate of Honour in 1999. John Cunningham is a football coach and former footballer. He is also known by his nickname "Bugsy". John Crabbe Cunningham (1927 – 31 January 1980) was a Scottish climber. Born in Glasgow, he climbed extensively in the Scottish mountains, where he pioneered new techniques of ice climbing. For several years, he worked for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) of the British Antarctic Territory (BAT). On 23 November 1964, he became the first to climb Antarctica's Mount Jackson. In 1960–61, he was a member of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, serving as Station Commander at Stonington Island in 1962–63. He was a member of the British Antarctic Survey, and was Station Commander of Adelaide Island in 1964–65. He was also a member of the South Georgia Survey of 1955–56. He died in 1980.
