John Cornwall (Upper Canada Politician)
John Cornwall was a farmer and political figure in Upper Canada. He represented Suffolk and Essex in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada from 1797 to 1800. He was born in Danbury, Connecticut, Danbury, Connecticut (other sources say that he was a native of Wales and came to the Thirteen Colonies around 1772 p. 312), the son of John Cornwall. He married Mary Benedict. Cornwall served with Butler's Rangers during the American Revolution. In 1797, he was named a justice of the peace for the Western District, Upper Canada, Western District. The Province of Upper Canada (french: link=no, province du Haut-Canada) was a part of British Canada established in 1791 by the Kingdom of Great Britain, to govern the central third of the lands in British North America, formerly part of the Province of Quebec since 1763. Upper Canada included all of modern-day Southern Ontario and all those areas of Northern Ontario in the which had formed part of New France, essentially the watersheds of the Ottawa River or Lakes Huron and Superior, excluding any lands within the watershed of Hudson Bay. The "upper" prefix in the name reflects its geographic position along the Great Lakes, mostly above the headwaters of the Saint Lawrence River, contrasted with Lower Canada (present-day Quebec) to the northeast. The Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada was the elected part of the legislature for the province of Upper Canada, functioning as the lower house in the Parliament of Upper Canada. Danbury is a city in Fairfield County, Connecticut, United States, located approximately northeast of New York City. Danbury's population as of 2022 was 87,642.
