John Corbett (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir John Corbett, (15 July 1822 – 10 December 1893) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station. Naval career Corbett joined the Royal Navy in 1835. Promoted to commander in 1852, he served in the Second Opium War. Following his promotion to captain in 1857, he commanded HMS ''Scout'', HMS ''Hastings'', HMS ''Black Prince'' and then the training ship HMS ''Britannia''. In 1867 he commanded HMS ''Warrior''. He was made Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station in 1877 and Commander-in-Chief, The Nore in 1884. He retired in 1887. In his spare time Corbett was an amateur artist who painted watercolours during his travels in the 1850s and 1860s. Family In 1864, he married Georgina Grace Holmes. South Kensington
South Kensington, nicknamed Little Paris, is a district just west of Central London in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. Historically it settled on part of the scattered Middlesex village of Brompton. Captain (naval)
Captain is the name most often given in English-speaking navies to the rank corresponding to command of the largest ships. The rank is equal to the army rank of colonel and air force rank of group captain. Equivalent ranks worldwide include ship-of-the-line captain (e.g. France, Argentina, Spain), captain of sea and war (e.g. Brazil, Portugal), captain at sea (e.g. Germany, Netherlands) and " captain of the first rank" (Russia). Ernst, Prince of Leiningen (german: Ernst Leopold Victor Carl August Joseph Emich, Furst zu Leiningen; 9 November 1830 – 5 April 1904) was a German nobleman who served with distinction in the British Royal Navy. Biography He was the elder son of Carl, Prince of Leiningen and Countess Marie von Klebelsberg. His father was the maternal half-brother of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. Ernst Leopold joined the Royal Navy in 1849, seeing action in the Second Burma War and later, the Crimean War, where he participated in the Danube and Baltic campaigns. Edward Rice (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir Edward Bridges Rice, (30 October 1819 – 30 October 1902) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Naval career The son of Edward Royd Rice MP and the brother of Admiral Sir Ernest Rice, Edward Rice joined the Royal Navy in 1832. He became mate in 1839, and was on board which took part in operations on the Yangtze River in 1842 during the First Opium War. After promotion to lieutenant in 1844 and commander in 1850, he then commanded a flotilla of boats on the Irrawaddy River in 1852 during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. Rice had charge of the seamen and naval guns on shore at the capture of Prome, for which he received the official thanks of the Governor-General in Council. Admiral Sir Reginald John James George Macdonald (19 October 1820 – 15 December 1899) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station. Early life Macdonald was born in Westminster, the son of Reginald George MacDonald, chief of Clan Ranald, and Lady Caroline Anne Edgcumbe, daughter of Richard Edgcumbe, 2nd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe. Training Ship
A training ship is a ship used to train students as sailors. The term is mostly used to describe ships employed by navies to train future officers. Essentially there are two types: those used for training at sea and old hulks used to house classrooms. The hands-on aspect provided by sail training has also been used as a platform for everything from semesters at sea for undergraduate oceanography and biology students, marine science and physical science for high school students, to character building for at-risk youths.
