John Coleman (musician)
John A. Coleman (born 9 August 1934) is a British conducting, conductor and music arranger. Coleman started his work as a conductor in 1968 in Val Guest's film Assignment K. He was music supervisor for the 1968 films ''The Strange Affair'' and ''Negatives (1968 film), Negatives'', and went on to become musical director for ''The Les Dawson Show'' (1979). Coleman has conducted the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest, United Kingdom entries for the Eurovision Song Contest on five occasions: Eurovision Song Contest 1980, 1980, Eurovision Song Contest 1981, 1981, Eurovision Song Contest 1983, 1983, Eurovision Song Contest 1984, 1984 and Eurovision Song Contest 1985, 1985. Conducting
Conducting is the art of directing a musical performance, such as an orchestral or choral concert. It has been defined as "the art of directing the simultaneous performance of several players or singers by the use of gesture." The primary duties of the conductor are to interpret the score in a way which reflects the specific indications in that score, set the tempo, ensure correct entries by ensemble members, and "shape" the phrasing where appropriate. Conductors communicate with their musicians primarily through hand gestures, usually with the aid of a baton, and may use other gestures or signals such as eye contact.
