John Cobbold (1746–1835)
John Cobbold (1746–1835) was a prominent business man in Ipswich. At the age of 22 he started running Cliff Brewery, part of the family brewing business established by his grandfather, Thomas Cobbold (1680–1752). More than thirty men of the Cobbold family have been named John, but he was known as "Big John". He not only greatly expanded the family business but also had 22 children. His father Thomas Cobbold (1708–1767) left monetary sums to be left to his sons and daughters, in trust to his wife, Sarah Cobbold. She leased the family brewery in Harwich to John and his partner Charles Cox. In 1773 he married Elizabeth Wilkinson with whom he had 15 children before her death in 1790. They moved into the Manor House, St Margaret's Green, located by St Margaret's Church, Ipswich. John Cobbold (1774–1860)
John Wilkinson Cobbold (1774–1860) was an English businessman, banker and brewer active in Ipswich. He was the first son of John Cobbold and Elizabeth Wilkinson, who together had 15 children before Elizabeth's death in 1790. His father remarried Elizabeth Knipe better known as the writer Elizabeth Cobbold. As a young man John Cobbold was given responsibility for the family brewery at Eye, Suffolk. Here he became involved in local politics. After the death of his father in 1835, he took over running the business in Ipswich. He joined the banking firm of Bacon, Cobbold & Co. He became the largest merchant and ship-owner in the area, trading in the Corn, Coal and Malt. John Cobbold (1797–1882)
John Chevallier Cobbold (24 August 1797 – 6 October 1882) was a British brewer, railway developer and Conservative Party politician. Background Cobbold was the son of John Wilkinson Cobbold and Harriet, daughter of Temple Chevallier (a priest). Until his father's death in 1860 he lived at Cobbold Lodge in Felixstowe. Business career Cobbold was a member of an established brewing family who had been brewing beer in Ipswich since 1746. He was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Eastern Union Railway (EUR) which saw Ipswich connected to Colchester (and thus London) by rail in 1846 and the Ipswich and Bury Railway which saw the railway open to Bury St Edmunds in 1847. The two railways merged and a line to Norwich was opened in 1849. John Cobbold (1831–1875)
John Patteson Cobbold (12 July 1831 – 10 December 1875) was a Conservative Party politician in England. The scion of a long-established prominent family in Ipswich, Suffolk, Cobbold was elected at the general election in February 1874 as one of the two Members of Parliament (MPs) for the borough of Ipswich, winning a seat held from 1847 to 1868 by his father John Cobbold (1797–1882). However, the younger Cobbold did not repeat his father's long service, dying office in December 1875, aged 44. At the resulting by-election, his younger brother Thomas Cobbold held the seat for the Conservatives. His son, John Dupuis Cobbold, was an artist and the husband of Zainab Cobbold, a Scottish convert to Islam. John Cobbold (businessman)
John Cavendish Cobbold (30 June 1927 – 13 September 1983) nicknamed "Johnny," was an English businessman and a grandson of Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire. He chaired Ipswich Town F.C. from 1957 to 1976. Early life Cobbold and his brother Patrick (1934–1994) both went to Wellesley House and on to Eton College. Johnny was just 17 and Patrick 10 when their father was killed in 1944. Johnny saw service in Palestine with the Welsh Guards and Patrick did National Service and signed on for an extra 2 years with his father’s Scots Guards. He was accidentally shot in the leg by one of his soldiers during training but went on to be Aide-de-camp to the Governor of The Bahamas. By the time Johnny celebrated his 21st birthday in 1948 he had become a director of Ipswich Town Football Club and was the youngest director in the football league.
