John Cecil Macgown
John Cecil Macgown was a Scottish doctor in Hong Kong and member of the sanitary board. Macgown went to Hong Kong and was the principal of the medical firm of Macgown, Anderson, and Durran and principal medical officer of China Underwriters, Ltd.. He was on the consulting staff of the Alice Memorial Hospital and affiliated hospital and member of the New Territories medical benevolent branch of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Dr. Macgown served in the Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps, holding the rank of major in the medical section of the corps from 1914 to 1918 during the First World War. Macgown was the president of the Hong Kong St. Andrew's Society. He was an amateur rider and owner and chairman of the Fanling Hunt and Race Club and a steward of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. The Urban Council (UrbCo) was a municipal council in Hong Kong responsible for municipal services on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon (including New Kowloon). These services were provided by the council's executive arm, the Urban Services Department. Later, the equivalent body for the New Territories was the Regional Council. The council was founded as the Sanitary Board in 1883. It was renamed the Urban Council when new legislation was passed in 1936 expanding its mandate. In 1973 the council was reorganised under non-government control and became financially autonomous. Alice Memorial Hospital
Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) is an acute district general hospital managed under the New Territories East Cluster of the Hospital Authority in Hong Kong. Established by the former London Missionary Society in 1887, it was the first teaching hospital in Hong Kong to train Cantonese locals in Western medical science. It moved to its current location in Tai Po in 1997. History Early in 1881, a Medical Mission Committee, mostly made up of members of the former London Missionary Society, was established to promote Western medicine in Hong Kong. Henry William Davis, chairman of the committee, donated substantially to set up a dispensary in the Tai Ping Shan district at the western end of Hong Kong Island. Hong Kong Volunteer Defence Corps
The Royal Hong Kong Regiment (The Volunteers) (RHKR(V)) ()), formed in May 1854, was a local auxiliary militia force funded and administered by the colonial Government of Hong Kong. Its powers and duties were mandated by the Royal Hong Kong Regiment Ordnance. During the imperial age, home defence units were raised in various British colony, British colonies with the intention of allowing regular army units tied up on garrison duty to be deployed elsewhere. Hong Kong Jockey Club
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong, having been founded in 1884. In 1959, it was granted a Royal Charter and renamed The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club (). The institution reverted to its original name in 1996 due to the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong in 1997. Membership of the club is by nomination and election. It is a non-profit organisation providing horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment in Hong Kong. Happy Valley Racecourse
The Happy Valley Racecourse is one of the two racecourses for horse racing and is a tourist attraction in Hong Kong. It is located in Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island, surrounded by Wong Nai Chung Road and Morrison Hill Road. The capacity of the venue is 55,000. History It was first built in 1845 to provide horse racing for the British people in Hong Kong. The area was previously swampland, but the only flat ground suitable for horse racing on Hong Kong Island. To make way for the racecourse, Hong Kong Government prohibited rice growing by villages in the surrounding area. The first race ran in December 1846. Over the years, horse racing became more and more popular among the Chinese residents. HMS ''Hector'' was a UK steam turbine passenger and refrigerated cargo liner launched in 1924. She was the fourth of six civilian ships to bear the name. José Pedro Braga
José Pedro "Jack" Braga, OBE ( Chinese: 布力架; 1871—1944 Macau) was a member of a Macaense family whose forebears came from Portugal to the colony of Macau in 1714. His maternal grandfather Delfino Noronha moved to Hong Kong from Macau about 1844 and established a successful printing business, Noronha and Co., which from 1859 until 1941 were printers to the Hong Kong Government.
