''John Carter, Warlord of Mars'' is a role-playing game published by Heritage Models, Inc. in 1978. Description ''John Carter, Warlord of Mars'' is a science-fantasy system based on Edgar Rice Burroughs's novels of Barsoom, a Mars ruled by various humanoid warrior races that fight with sword and gun. Although it mainly consists of man-to-man combat rules for use with miniatures (as they were published to support a line of Barsoomian figures), it does include some rules for role-playing. Publication history ''John Carter, Warlord of Mars'' was designed by Michael S. Matheny, with a cover by Russ Manning, and published by Heritage Models, Inc. in 1978 as a 64-page book. There were at least two printings with different interior layout but both had a copyright date of 1978. One had a full color cover and one had a red tinted cover. Reception John J. ''The Warlord of Mars'' is a science fantasy novel by American writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, the third of his Barsoom series. Burroughs began writing it in June, 1913, going through five working titles; ''Yellow Men of Barsoom'', ''The Fighting Prince of Mars'', ''Across Savage Mars'', ''The Prince of Helium'', and ''The War Lord of Mars''. The finished story was first published in '' All-Story Magazine'' as a four-part serial in the issues for December, 1913-March, 1914.Sampson, p. 182. It was later published as a complete novel by A. ''John Carter, Warlord of Mars'' is a comics series published from 1977 by American company Marvel Comics. Created by Marv Wolfman (writer) and Gil Kane (penciller), it was based on the Barsoom series of Edgar Rice Burroughs and featured the eponymous character. The entire series (with few exceptions) takes place between the third and fourth paragraphs of chapter 27 of Burroughs' novel ''A Princess of Mars''. The series ran from 1977 to 1979. In 1978 it won the "Favourite New Title" Eagle Award. Other comics featuring the character Dell Comics released three issues of ''John Carter of Mars'' under its ''Four Color Comics'' banner. The issue numbers are 375, 437, and 488, and were released in 1952-1953. Gold Key Comics would reprint them as three issues in 1964, numbering one through three, but reprinted them out of order. Edgar Rice Burroughs
Edgar Rice Burroughs (September 1, 1875 – March 19, 1950) was an American author, best known for his prolific output in the adventure, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Best-known for creating the characters Tarzan and John Carter, he also wrote the '' Pellucidar'' series, the ''Amtor'' series, and the '' Caspak'' trilogy. Tarzan was immediately popular, and Burroughs capitalized on it in every way possible, including a syndicated Tarzan comic strip, movies, and merchandise. Tarzan remains one of the most successful fictional characters to this day and is a cultural icon. Burroughs's California ranch is now the center of the Tarzana neighborhood in Los Angeles, named after the character. Barsoom is a fictional representation of the planet Mars created by American pulp fiction author Edgar Rice Burroughs. The first Barsoom tale was serialized as ''Under the Moons of Mars'' in 1912 and published as a novel as ''A Princess of Mars'' in 1917. Ten sequels followed over the next three decades, further extending his vision of Barsoom and adding other characters. The ''Barsoom'' series, where John Carter in the late 19th century is mysteriously transported from Earth to a Mars suffering from dwindling resources, has been cited by many well known science fiction writers as having inspired them.
