John Carnegie, 12th Earl Of Northesk
John Douglas Carnegie, 12th Earl of Northesk (16 February 1895 – 22 July 1975) inherited the earldom in 1963. Early life Carnegie was born on 16 February 1895. He was the son of Margaret Jean Johnstone-Douglas and Lt.-Col. Hon. Douglas Carnegie, MP for Winchester. His younger brother David died in 1917 during World War I. His maternal grandparents were Arthur Johnstone-Douglas and Jane Maitland ( Stewart) Johnstone-Douglas and his paternal grandparents were Lt.-Col. George Carnegie, 9th Earl of Northesk, and the former Elizabeth Georgina Frances Elliot. He was educated at Gresham's School, Holt and King's College, Cambridge. Earl of Northesk is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1662 for John Carnegie, who notably served as Sheriff of Forfarshire. He was given the subsidiary title of Lord Rosehill and Eglismauldie (or Inglismaldie) at the same time. Carnegie had already been created Earl of Ethie and Lord Lour in 1647 but relinquished those titles in exchange for the 1662 creations. For the purposes of precedence and seniority, the earldom of Northesk is treated as having been created in 1647, the date of the creation of the earldom of Ethie. Lord Northesk's great-grandson, the fourth Earl, sat in the House of Lords as a Scottish representative peer from 1708 to 1715. His younger son, the sixth Earl, was an admiral in the Royal Navy. He was succeeded by his son, the seventh Earl. He was also an admiral in the navy and was third in command at the Battle of Trafalgar. Robert Andrew Carnegie, 13th Earl of Northesk (24 June 1926 – 26 January 1994), was a British landowner, farmer and hereditary peer. He was the son of John Carnegie, 12th Earl of Northesk, and Dorothy May Campion. Carnegie was educated at Pangbourne Nautical College and Tabor Academy, Massachusetts. He served in the Royal Navy 1942–1945. He was an amateur racing driver (racing as "Robin Carnegie") and raced at Le Mans and in the Mille Miglia. In the 1970s he moved to the Isle of Man where he bred Charolais cattle and exported them throughout the world. On 20 July 1949, he married Jean Margaret MacRae, daughter of Captain John Duncan George MacRae and Lady Phyllis Hervey, daughter of the 4th Marquess of Bristol.
