John Button (Australian Politician)
John Norman Button (30 June 19338 April 2008) was an Australian politician, who served as a senior minister in the Hawke and Keating Labor governments. He was notable for the Button car plan, which involved modernising Australia's car industry by reducing tariffs and government protection. Biography Button was born in Ballarat, Victoria, and was educated at The Geelong College and the University of Melbourne where he graduated in arts and law. He became a lawyer with Maurice Blackburn & Co and later a barrister in Melbourne and became active in the Australian Labor Party from the late 1950s. In the 1960s he joined a group of other middle-class Labor activists, such as John Cain, Barry Jones, Richard McGarvie, Frank Costigan and Michael Duffy, known as "the Participants" whose objective was to end Left-wing control of the Victorian branch of the Labor Party. John Button (1624–1679)
John Button (1624 – December 1679) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1659 and 1679. Button was the only son of John Button of Buckland in Hampshire and his first wife Eleanor South, daughter of Thomas South of South Baddesley. He entered Inner Temple in 1641. He was made freeman of Lymington in 1646 and was a commissioner for militia in 1648. In 1659, he was elected Member of Parliament for Lymington in the Third Protectorate Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Lymington in 1660 for the Convention Parliament. In 1665 he succeeded his father to the estate of Buckland. He was a commissioner for assessment for Hampshire from 1677 and was a captain of the militia by 1679. In 1679 he was returned as MP for Lymington in the two elections but died before the second parliament met. John Button (Parliamentarian)
John Button (died 1665) of Buckland, near Lymington, Hampshire was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1625 and 1648. He fought on the Parliamentary side in the English Civil War. Button was the son of John Button of Upavon, Wiltshire. He succeeded his father in 1601, and inherited Buckland, Hampshire from his uncle Henry in 1624. He was appointed High Sheriff of Hampshire for 1636. In 1625, he was elected Member of Parliament for Lymington. He was elected MP for Lymington again in November 1640 for the Long Parliament. Button fought in the parliamentary army and held local offices and that of Captain of Hurst Castle from 1643–45. He was secluded in 1648 under Pride's Purge. Button married as his first wife Eleanor South, daughter of Thomas South of South Baddesley. John Button (artist)
John Button (1929–12 December 1982) was an American artist, well known for his city-scapes. Educated at the University of California, Berkeley then moved to New York City in the early 1950s. He became friends with Fairfield Porter and Frank O'Hara and assumed his part in the New York School of Painters and Poets. Amidst the frenzy of Abstract Expressionism, Button remained true to his interest in realism, and is now most commonly associated with such New York School artists as Fairfield Porter, Jane Freilicher, and Alex Katz. Button was a fine draftsman and drew from life models throughout his career. However, little known are his sketches of male nudes – studio models from the School of Visual Arts, where Button taught, as well as personal acquaintances. At one point Button was in a relationship with the poet James Schuyler. Button died of a heart attack in New York City on 12 December 1982. John Button (campaigner)
John Button (born 9 February 1944 in Liverpool, England) is a Western Australian man who was the victim of a significant miscarriage of justice. Button was wrongfully convicted of the manslaughter, by vehicle impact, of his girlfriend, Rosemary Anderson, in 1963. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, and released in 1968. The conviction was quashed in 2002. Vindication Several appeals to courts or for ministerial intervention were unsuccessful. In 1998, a Western Australian journalist, Estelle Blackburn, advanced the cause of Button's vindication through her book ''Broken Lives''. Following the book's publication, the matter went before the courts again with Button represented by Tom Percy QC and Jonathan Davies both of whom worked ''pro bono'' on the case. At the original trial the strongest evidence apart from Button's confession was that his 1962 Simca P60 Aronde sedan had damage consistent with an accident. Major John Button (May 18, 1772 – November 9, 1861) was an American-born Upper Canada settler (founder of Buttonville, Ontario), sedentary Canadian militia officer and founder of the 1st York Light Dragoons (also as Troop of Markham Dragoons or Captain Button's Dragoons). Early Years Button was born in New London, Connecticut to Joseph Button and Mary Ann Atwell. He was the fourth generation of Buttons in America (the first ancestor is believed to be Matthias Button (1610–1672), who arrived in the Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony around 1633).
