John Buttencourt Avila
John Buttencourt Avila (March 19, 1865 – December 25, 1937) was a California farmer who has been called the father of the sweet potato industry. He was a Portuguese American who came to California as a young man, and settled in Merced County. Biography Avila was born March 19, 1865, on São Jorge Island in the Azores of Portugal. He immigrated from the Azores to California in 1883.
