John Buchan Ross
Air Commodore Dr John Buchan Ross, QHS, CStJ, (3 July 1912 – 24 January 2009) was a senior British Royal Air Force officer who served from 1935 in Iraq, the East Asia during World War II and in the Malaya Emergency. Education John Buchan Ross was born in Tayport and educated at Strathallan School in Perthshire, Scotland. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a MB ChB and DTM&H. Career Ross joined the Royal Air Force in 1935 and was posted to Iraq where he served as squadron medical officer. On 3 January 1938 he was granted a short term commission as a flying officer for three years on the active list having held seniority since 3 January 1937. On 3 January 1939 he was promoted to flight lieutenant having held seniority since 3 January 1938. Following the outbreak of World War II he was posted to the Far East. Tayport
Tayport, also known as Ferry-Port on Craig, is a town and burgh, and parish, in the county of Fife, Scotland, acting as a commuter town for Dundee. The motto of the Burgh is ''Te oportet alte ferri'' ("It is incumbent on you to carry yourself high"), a pun on ''Tayport at auld Tay Ferry''. Tayport lies close to the north east tip of Fife. To the north it looks across the River Tay to Broughty Ferry and Broughty Castle. To the east is the vast Tentsmuir Nature Reserve, an area of forested dunes measuring some 3 km from east to west and 6 km from north to south and edged by wide sands that continue all the way round to the mouth of the River Eden. To be mentioned in dispatches (or despatches, MiD) describes a member of the armed forces whose name appears in an official report written by a superior officer and sent to the high command, in which their gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy is described. In some countries, a service member's name must be mentioned in dispatches as a condition for receiving certain decorations. United Kingdom, British Empire, and Commonwealth of Nations Servicemen and women of the British Empire or the Commonwealth who are mentioned in despatches (MiD) are not awarded a medal for their actions, but receive a certificate and wear an oak leaf device on the ribbon of the appropriate campaign medal. Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. In severe cases, it can cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death. Symptoms usually begin ten to fifteen days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. If not properly treated, people may have recurrences of the disease months later. In those who have recently survived an infection, reinfection usually causes milder symptoms. This partial resistance disappears over months to years if the person has no continuing exposure to malaria. Malaria is caused by single-celled microorganisms of the ''Plasmodium'' group. DTM&H
Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) is a postgraduate award, given after a prescribed period of instruction followed by an examination consisting of three parts; (a) a written examination (b) a practical laboratory examination and (c) an oral examination.
