John Browne (Fine Gael Politician)
John Browne (1 October 1936 – 27 March 2019) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency from 1989 to 2002. He served as a Senator from 1983 to 1987. Biography A former teacher, he was appointed to Seanad Éireann as Senator in 1983 by the Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald, but he was not returned again after Fine Gael lost power following the 1987 general election. Browne was first elected to Dáil Éireann as a Fine Gael TD at the 1989 general election and retained his seat at the 1992 and 1997 general elections, before retiring at the 2002 general election. His son Fergal Browne also served as a Senator. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". Overview For electoral purposes, the Republic of Ireland is divided into areas known as constituencies, each of which elects three, four, or five TDs. Under the Constitution, every 20,000 to 30,000 people must be represented by at least one TD. A candidate to become a TD must be an Irish citizen and over 21 years of age. 1987 Irish General Election
The 1987 Irish general election was held on Tuesday, 17 February, four weeks after the dissolution of the Dáil on 20 January. A continuing crisis over public finance had led to the collapse of Garret FitzGerald's coalition government and the dissolution. The 25th Dáil assembled at Leinster House on 10 March and Charles Haughey was appointed as Taoiseach leading a Fianna Fáil minority government. The general election took place in 41 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in the lower house of parliament, Dáil Éireann. There were minor amendments to constituency boundaries under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1983.
