John Brocket (died 1558)
Sir John Brocket (1513–1558) was an English Member of Parliament. He was the eldest son of John Brocket of Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire and succeeded his grandfather in 1532. He may have been the junior Knight of the Shire (MP) for Hertfordshire in 1542. He was knighted in 1547 and acquired Brocket Hall in the early 1550s. He was re-elected MP for Hertfordshire in 1553 and 1555. He married Margaret, the daughter and heiress of William Bensted of Bennington, Hertfordshire and had 10 sons and 3 daughters. Knight Of The Shire
Knight of the shire ( la, milites comitatus) was the formal title for a member of parliament (MP) representing a county constituency in the British House of Commons, from its origins in the medieval Parliament of England until the Redistribution of Seats Act 1885 ended the practice of each county (or '' shire'') forming a single constituency. The corresponding titles for other MPs were ''burgess'' in a borough constituency (or '' citizen'' if the borough had city status) and ''baron'' for a Cinque Ports constituency. Knights of the shire had more prestige than burgesses, and sitting burgesses often stood for election for the shire in the hope of increasing their standing in Parliament. The name "knight of the shire" originally implied that the representative had to be a knight, and the writ of election referred to a belted knight until the 19th century; but by the 14th century men who were not knights were commonly elected. Hertfordshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
Hertfordshire was a county constituency covering the county of Hertfordshire in England. It returned two Knights of the Shire to the House of Commons of England until 1707, then to the House of Commons of Great Britain until 1800, and to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom from 1800 until 1832. The Reform Act 1832 gave the county a third seat with effect from the 1832 general election. Elections were held using the bloc vote system, when contested. However, even after the 1832 reforms, contested elections were the exception: of the 17 elections from 1832 to 1880, 9 were uncontested, including the 1880 general election. Brocket Hall
Brocket Hall is a neo-classical country house set in a large park at the western side of the urban area of Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire, England. The estate is equipped with two golf courses and seven smaller listed buildings, apart from the main house. The freehold on the estate is held by the 3rd Baron Brocket. The house is Grade I-listed. History On the parkland site were two predecessors, the first of which was built in 1239 as Watership or Durantshide Manor, early held variously of Hatfield Manor and the Bishop of Ely. One of these was built about 1430; whereas in 1413 John Mortimer held Waterships it is known in 1477 Thomas Brockett held both manors. The house was acquired by John Brocket in the early 1550s and passed to his son Sir John Brocket (Captain of Queen Elizabeth's personal guard) on his death in 1558. John Brocket (died 1598)
Sir John Brocket (c. 1540 – 2 October 1598) of Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire was an English politician. Biography John Brocket was the son of Sir John Brocket (1513–1558) and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He succeeded his father in 1558 and was appointed High Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire for 1566–67. He was elected the secondary Member of Parliament for Hertfordshire in 1572. He was knighted in 1577. The 1578 edition of ''Calvin's Lectures or Daily Sermons upon the Prophet Jonas, translated into English by Nathaniel Baxter'' contained a long dedication to him. Family Sir John married twice: firstly Helen, the daughter of Sir Robert Lytton of Knebworth, with whom he had 5 daughters and secondly Elizabeth, the daughter and coheiress of Roger Moore, and widow of Gabriel Fowler, with whom he had another daughter.
