John Brecken
John Brecken (February 23, 1800 – November 2, 1847) was a businessman and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented Charlottetown in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1829 to 1834. He was born in Charlottetown, the son of Ralph Brecken, who had served as speaker in the provincial assembly, and Matilda Robinson, the daughter of Joseph Robinson. When he was thirteen, his father died and his mother took over the operation of the business. Brecken served as deputy treasurer for the colony and resident director for the Bank of British North America. In 1826, he married Margaret Leah de St Croix. He was named to the colony's Council in 1834, serving until his death in Charlottetown in 1847. His son Frederick de St Croix Brecken served in the provincial assembly and the Canadian House of Commons. Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces and territories of Canada. The Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island (french: Assemblée législative de l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard) is the sole chamber of the General Assembly of Prince Edward Island. The Legislative Assembly meets at Province House, which is located at the intersection of Richmond and Great George Streets in Charlottetown. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873. From this, the city adopted as its motto ''Cunabula Foederis'', "Birthplace of Confederation". Ralph Brecken
Ralph Brecken (1770 – July 1, 1813) was a merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented Queens County in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island He was born in England, the son of John Brecken, an early member of the provincial assembly. Brecken served as speaker for the provincial assembly from 1812 to 1813, was also lieutenant in the county militia and served as a justice of the peace. Brecken married Matilda, the daughter of Joseph Robinson. His son John also served in the provincial assembly and his grandson Frederick de St Croix Brecken was a member of the assembly and also served in the Canadian House of Commons. Joseph Robinson (loyalist)
Joseph Robinson (ca. 1742 – August 24, 1807) was an American-born lawyer, judge and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1790 to 1794. He was born in the Province of Virginia and later moved to South Carolina. He was a major and later lieutenant-colonel in the Loyalist militia during the American Revolutionary War and fought at the Battle of Ninety-Six Court-House in 1775. At the end of the war, he first settled in Jamaica, then New Brunswick and finally went to St John's Island (later renamed Prince Edward Island), in 1789 at the invitation of governor Edmund Fanning. In 1790, he was named an assistant judge in the Supreme Court. In the same year, he was elected to the assembly. The Legislative Council of Prince Edward Island was the upper house of the Legislature of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. It existed from 1773 to 1893. Members were appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Prince Edward Island on the advice of the Premier until 1862 when it became an elected body. Frederick De St Croix Brecken
Frederick de St. Croix Brecken (9 December 1828 – 14 October 1903) was a lawyer and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented Charlottetown in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1873 to 1876 and Queen's County in the House of Commons of Canada from 1878 to 1882 and from 1883 to 1884 as a Conservative member. He was born in Charlottetown, the son of John Brecken and Margaret Leah de St. Croix. He was educated in Charlottetown and then articled in law with Robert Hodgson, continuing his studied at Lincoln's Inn and the Inner Temple in London. On his return, he was called to the bar and set up practice in Charlottetown with Thomas Heath Haviland. In 1858, Brecken married Helen Leith Boyd Emslie. John Brecken (loyalist)
John Brecken (died March 6, 1827) was an English-born United Empire Loyalist, merchant and political figure. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1785 to 1787. He came to Charlottetown from Shelburne, Nova Scotia in 1784 with his wife, Ann Wake, and established a business there. He returned to England some time before 1826 and died there in 1827.
