John Bladen Tinker
Captain John Bladen Tinker (c.1725 – 19 July 1767) was a senior Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, East Indies Station from 1763 to 1765. Naval career John Bladen Tinker was born in about 1725. He joined the Royal Navy on 15 June 1741 as an ordinary seaman on board the 90-gun ship of the line HMS ''Bafleur''. Promoted to captain on 4 July 1756, he was given command of the sixth-rate . He went on to command, successively, the third-rate , the fifth-rate and the sixth-rate . __NOTOC__ An ordinary seaman (OS) is a member of the deck department of a ship. The position is an apprenticeship to become an able seaman, and has been for centuries. In modern times, an OS is required to work on a ship for a specific amount of time, gaining what is referred to as "sea time". Third-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy, a third rate was a ship of the line which from the 1720s mounted between 64 and 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks (thus the related term two-decker). Years of experience proved that the third rate ships embodied the best compromise between sailing ability (speed, handling), firepower, and cost. Sixth-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a sixth-rate was the designation for small warships mounting between 20 and 28 carriage-mounted guns on a single deck, sometimes with smaller guns on the upper works and sometimes without. It thus encompassed ships with up to 30 guns in all. HMS Barfleur (1697)
HMS ''Barfleur'' was a 90-gun second rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched at Deptford Dockyard on 10 August 1697. She was rebuilt according to the 1706 Establishment at Deptford, relaunching on 27 June 1716. She took part in the Battle of Cape Passaro in 1719, and then served during the War of 1739–48, including the Battle of Toulon in 1744, before being paid off in 1745. However, the ''Barfleur'' was reduced to an 80-gun third rate in 1755 and served throughout the Seven Years' War, prior to being hulked in 1764, and eventually broken up in 1783. A ship of the line was a type of naval warship constructed during the Age of Sail from the 17th century to the mid-19th century. John Tinker 1700–1758 was an early Colonial official who served the Royal African Company on the Gold Coast, was an Agent for the South Sea Company in Portobello, and was Royal Governor of the Bahama Islands from 1741–1758. Early life John Tinker was born and baptised on 30 July 1700 to parents Jeremiah and Hannah at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Westminster. His grandfather was Captain John Tinker, Master Attendant of the King’s Yard at Deptford who commanded the ''Coverdine'' during the reign of Charles II. In 1722 John served as governor of the Cape Coast Castle, a trading post of the Royal African Company which traded principally in gold and slaves.
