John Benson (publisher)
John Benson (died 23 January 1667) was a London publisher of the middle seventeenth century, best remembered for a historically important publication of the Sonnets and miscellaneous poems of William Shakespeare in 1640. John Benson began his career as a stationer in 1635; he maintained shops in Chancery Lane (from 1635 on) and St. Dunstan's Churchyard in Fleet Street (1640 and after). In his publishing career, Benson generally concentrated on the lower end of the market for printed matter in his era; he "specialized in the publication of ballads and broadsides." Yet he published books too, like Joseph Rutter's ''The Shepherds' Holy-Day'' (1635); he issued Ben Jonson's ''Execration Against Vulcan'' in 1640. John Benson (architect)
Sir John Benson ICE (1812 – 17 October 1874) was an Irish architect, born in Collooney, County Sligo. Although most of his work was in Cork, he was knighted for his design for the Dublin Great Industrial Exhibition. Life John Benson was born in Collooney, County Sligo, in 1812. At the age of twenty-one he was sent by Edward Joshua Cooper of Markree Castle, to 'a technical school in Dublin', presumably the Royal Dublin Society's School of Architectural Drawing. Early work included the restoration of Markree Castle in Collooney. Benson passed his surveyor's examination in 1846 and worked as county surveyor for Cork and was involved in the relief work during the famine of 1847. In 1848 he was appointed of consulting engineer to the Cork Harbour Board and improved the navigation of the river. John Prentiss Benson
John Prentiss Benson (also John P. Benson) (1865–1947) was an American architect and artist noted for his maritime paintings. Early life Benson was born into a prosperous family in Salem, Massachusetts. He was trained as an architect at the Académie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He was the brother of Frank Weston Benson. He married Sarah Bissell Whitman in 1893; they lived in Plainfield, New Jersey and then in Flushing, New York. Career Upon his return from Paris, Benson was employed by McKim, Mead & White in New York City. He and Albert Leverett Brockway, a fellow architecture student from his Paris days, soon formed their own firm, Benson and Brockway. For six months between 1904 and 1905, Benson created "The Woozlebeasts," a comic strip written almost entirely in limericks, accompanied by his nonsensical drawings. John Howard Benson
John Howard Benson (July 6, 1901 – February 23, 1956) was an American calligrapher, stonecarver, incised letter designer, author, and educator. Career He was educated at Rogers High School, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Students League. Benson was a professor of Sculpture and Calligraphy + Design Theory at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1931 to his death in 1956. He did carvings for Rhode Island School of Design, Groton School, Phillips Exeter Academy, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Benson designed the school's diploma and seal, in use to this day, as well as the seal of The Wheeler School. Benson was the author of ''The Elements of Lettering'' with coauthor Arthur Graham Carey. John Everett Benson (born 1939), known as Fud, is an American calligrapher, stonecarver and typeface designer who has created inscriptions for monuments including the John F. Kennedy memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, the National Gallery of Art, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, and the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. Work John Everett Benson was born in Newport, Rhode Island. He began working for his father, John Howard Benson, at the age of fifteen at The John Stevens Shop. He studied sculpture at Rhode Island School of Design. In 1964, Benson and John Hegnauer were commissioned to design and carve the inscriptions on the John F. John Harvey Benson (23 December 1942 – 30 October 2010) was a Scottish football player and manager. Born in Arbroath, Benson started his career as an apprentice at Manchester City. He turned professional in 1961, and made 44 league appearances over the next three seasons before being sold to Fourth Division side Torquay United in 1964. He was a regular in the first team during his whole spell with Torquay, helping the club win promotion to the Third Division in the 1965–66 season. In 1970, Benson joined John Bond's Fourth Division side Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, where he was part of another promotion winning side in the 1970–71 season. He had a short spell on loan with Exeter City in 1973, and later that year moved to Norwich City, who had recently appointed John Bond as their new manager.
