John Bateman, 2nd Viscount Bateman
John Bateman, 2nd Viscount Bateman (April 1721 – 2 March 1802) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1746 to 1784. Bateman was the eldest son of William Bateman, 1st Viscount Bateman MP and his wife Lady Anne Spencer, daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, and granddaughter of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. He was commissioned an ensign in the 2nd Regiment of Foot Guards on 16 November 1740, retiring from the Army on 10 February 1741/2. In December 1744 on the death of his father, he succeeded as second Viscount Bateman. He married Elizabeth Sambroke, daughter of John Sambroke, MP on 2 July 1748. The property Bateman inherited from his father (Shobdon Court, Herefordshire) gave him a parliamentary interest at Leominster and he was connected with the Marlborough, Bedford, and Pelham families through his mother. John Bateman (Australian Settler)
John Bateman (1789 – 3 April 1855) was an early colonist at Fremantle. He was the postmaster, general store owner and an investor in the Fremantle Whaling Company. The suburb of Bateman is named after him and his family. Life Bateman was born in London, and was dealing in silk when he married Mary Ann Benningfield in 1824. They had nine children including three sons who emigrated with Bateman and his wife to the new Swan River Colony in Western Australia in 1830. They bought a plot in Fremantle in the second tranche of land made available by the Governor of Western Australia. On this acre of land Bateman built a stone residence and a general store. In 1833 he took on the job of postmaster, a position that his family carried out for many years. Bateman's eldest son, John Wesley Bateman, took an interest in the coast and as a teenager he would journey out with the American whaling ships. John Frederick Bateman
John Frederick La Trobe Bateman (30 May 1810 – 10 June 1889) was an English civil engineer whose work formed the basis of the modern United Kingdom water supply industry. For more than 50 years from 1835 he designed and constructed reservoirs and waterworks. His largest project was the Longdendale Chain system that has supplied Manchester with much of its water since the 19th century. The construction of what was in its day the largest chain of reservoirs in the world began in 1848 and was completed in 1877. Bateman became "the greatest dam-builder of his generation". Bateman also worked on water supply systems for Glasgow, Belfast, Bolton, Chester, Dublin, Newcastle upon Tyne, Oldham, Perth, Stockport and Wolverhampton, amongst many others. He carried out projects abroad as well, including designing and constructing a drainage and water supply system for Buenos Aires, and water supply schemes for Naples, Constantinople and Colombo. John Jones Bateman
John Jones Bateman (1817–1903) was an English architect, active in the town (later city) of Birmingham, where he designed a number of important civic buildings, and nonconformist churches, often in partnership with George Drury. He was the founder and first president of the Birmingham Architectural Association. The 1861 and 1871 censuses show his home as Hawkesford House (since demolished and replaced by an apartment block of the same name), Castle Bromwich. Bateman had five daughters and three sons, although one of the latter died in infancy. The younger of his surviving sons, Charles Edward Bateman, was also an architect and was articled to his father from 1881 to 1886. becoming his partner, as Bateman and Bateman, in 1887. John Wesley Bateman (15 December 1824 – 15 April 1909) was a Fremantle, Western Australia merchant who was later President of the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce Life The son of silk merchant John Bateman (Australian settler), John Bateman, John Wesley Bateman was born in London on 15 December 1824. In 1830 the Bateman family emigrated to Western Australia on board the ''Medina'', settling in Fremantle, where John Bateman Snr established himself as general store owner, whaler and postmaster. John Snr had three sons, Walter, John Wesley and Charles. Charles died in Indonesia on the way out to Australia. He also had six daughters. John Bateman Snr died on 3 April 1855 soon after his wife took over his duties as postmaster. His sons took over the family business, which was formed into a company in 1857.
