Sir John Barrow, 1st Baronet, (19 June 1764 – 23 November 1848) was an English geographer, linguist, writer and civil servant best known for term as the Second Secretary to the Admiralty from 1804 until 1845. John Henry Barrow (1817 – 22 August 1874) was a Congregational minister, journalist and South Australian politician. Early life Barrow was born in England, son of John Barrow. After he studied for the Congregational ministry at Hackney College, he took charge of the Congregational Church at Market Drayton in Shropshire, where he also ran a school. He was then transferred to Bradford, Yorkshire where he began writing for the Bradford Observer. Career in Australia Barrow emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia, in the hope that a change of climate would be beneficial to the health of his invalid wife, arriving in September 1853 on the ''Hannah Maria'' with his wife and four children, and obtained a position in the office of the '' South Australian Register''. John Barrow (American Politician)
John Jenkins Barrow (born October 31, 1955) is an American politician who was the U.S. representative for from 2005 to 2015. The district includes much of the Georgia side of the Central Savannah River Area and includes counties as far south as Coffee County and as far west as Laurens County. He is a member of the Democratic Party. As a Democratic congressman in an increasingly Republican district, Barrow was targeted for defeat by Republican strategists from the time he was first elected. Twice the GOP-controlled Georgia General Assembly redrew his district, forcing him to move first from Athens to Savannah and then from Savannah to Augusta to remain a resident of his district. He was ultimately defeated in his 2014 bid for re-election. Barrow was the Democratic nominee for Georgia Secretary of State in 2018, but lost in a run-off election. John Barrow (historian)
John Barrow (fl. 1735–1774) was an English mathematician, naval historian and lexicography, lexicographer. His geographical dictionary first appeared in 1756. Life Nothing is known of Barrow's family. He was initially a teacher of mathematics and navigation aboard ships of the Royal Navy. He retired before 1750 and devoted himself to writing and compiling dictionaries and other works related to his knowledge of mathematics and science. Barrow's best-known work was ''Navigatio Britannica'' (1750), a practical handbook of navigation and charts still being advertised by its publisher, Mount & Page, in 1787. It included an examination of nautical instruments and explained the recently introduced vernier scale. Barrow seems to have been in close touch with nautical instrument makers while he was a naval instructor. John Barrow (Catholic Priest, Born 1735)
John Barrow (1735 – 1811) was a Roman Catholic priest towards the end of the penal times for English Catholics. Biography Barrow was from a Catholic yeoman family from Westby-in-the-Fylde. His uncle, Father Edward Barrow, was a Jesuit priest serving Wesby Hall who had been outlawed as a Catholic priest in 1717. Barrow, studied in the English College in Rome for seven years but was not ordained immediately as he was impressed into the Royal Navy in Portsmouth and served for five years before deserting at Dunkirk. He was acquitted by the court-martial through pretending to be an Italian speaker. He resumed his studies for the priesthood at Douai where he was ordained in 1766 and became the priest at the mission in Claughton in his native Lancashire which had been associated with the recusant Brockholes family. John Dodgson Barrow (November 24, 1824 – December 7, 1906), primarily known for his landscape paintings and portraits, has been regarded as belonging to the second generation of the Hudson River School. His subjects were frequently Central New York scenes, mostly around Skaneateles, New York, where he lived and worked until moving to New York City. A non-profit gallery is devoted to his work inside the library in the village of Skaneateles.
